Your Europe trip isn't cancelled โ€” but here's what you need to do now

There's a lot of noise right now about travelling to Europe in 2026 โ€” entry requirements, geopolitical uncertainty, the weaker US dollar. I want to cut through it and give you something actually useful.

First, the reassurance: Western Europe is not a primary target of current global tensions, and demand for cultural travel, city breaks, and land-based tours continues to be strong. The Traveler People are going. Tours are operating. Europe is open.

What IS a different story right now is cruising. Major cruise lines have been withdrawing or reshuffling itineraries at short notice, reflecting deeper operational and geopolitical concerns โ€” particularly in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. Travel And Tour World If you have a cruise booked or are considering one, stay close to communications from your cruise line and make sure you have the right protection in place.

Which brings me to the most important thing I want to say in this post:
Travel insurance is non-negotiable right now.

In a stable world, travel insurance is a good idea. In the current climate, it's essential.
Here's what to look for:
๐Ÿ”น Trip cancellation cover โ€” if your tour or cruise is cancelled by the operator
๐Ÿ”น Trip interruption cover โ€” if something changes mid-trip
๐Ÿ”น Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) โ€” the gold standard when the world feels unpredictable
๐Ÿ”น Medical evacuation cover โ€” never leave home without it
๐Ÿ”น "Travel supplier default" cover โ€” protection if a company ceases operations

The difference between land-based tours and cruises right now is significant. Land tours are largely unaffected by the current disruptions and continuing as planned. Cruises โ€” particularly those repositioning through or operating near the Middle East โ€” are in a more uncertain position. Your insurance needs to reflect which type of travel you're booking.

๐Ÿ“‹ Your 2026 Europe pre-travel checklist:

* Check your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Europe
* Visiting the UK? Apply for your ETA before you go โ€” it's already required
* Know your 90/180-day Schengen rule if visiting multiple countries
* ETIAS is coming in 2026 โ€” not required yet, but worth knowing about
* Get comprehensive travel insurance โ€” don't skip this step
* Factor in the exchange rate โ€” the USD has weakened against the euro

Europe is wonderful and it is absolutely worth visiting. These are preparation steps, not reasons to stay home.

And if you'd rather hand all of this complexity to someone who tracks it so you don't have to โ€” that's exactly what I'm here for.

The quiet change that affects introverts most โ€” and what I learned flying into Europe via Lisbon

Can I share something that genuinely confused me the first time it happened?

I flew to Spain via TAP Air Portugal. My first stop in Europe was Lisbon, Portugal โ€” that's where I cleared immigration and went through border control. Then I caught my connecting flight from Lisbon to Sevilla.

When I landed in Spain? No immigration. No passport check. Nothing.

It makes total sense once you understand how Schengen works. But nobody explained it to me beforehand, and I'll be honest โ€” when I landed in Sevilla with no immigration queue in sight, I was completely confused and unsure what to do. Was I supposed to find a passport desk? Had I missed something? It took me a moment to piece together that I'd already done everything I needed to do back in Lisbon.

Because I'd already entered the Schengen Area in Portugal, Spain didn't need to check me again. One entry point covers the whole zone โ€” even when you're crossing into a completely different country.

I'm sharing this because the Schengen Area is at the heart of what's changing for American travellers right now โ€” and understanding how it actually works makes the new Entry/Exit System (EES) much less intimidating.

Here's what's changed since October 2025:
๐Ÿ”น Instead of a passport stamp, your first entry into the Schengen Area now involves biometric scanning โ€” facial photo and fingerprints recorded digitally
๐Ÿ”น Like my Lisbon experience, this only happens at your first Schengen entry point โ€” not at every country crossing after that
๐Ÿ”น E-gates with facial recognition are being rolled out โ€” low interaction, faster, and honestly a quiet win for introverts
๐Ÿ”น No advance action needed โ€” it happens automatically when you arrive

My practical tips for anxious travellers:
โ†’ Know your first Schengen entry point before you fly โ€” that's where the scan happens
โ†’ Build in extra time at that first stop, especially if you have a same-day onward connection
โ†’ If e-gates are available, use them โ€” minimal human interaction, quicker process
โ†’ Bags checked through to your final destination on a single ticket? Your experience will likely mirror mine โ€” smooth connections after that first entry

The more you understand how it works, the less scary it is. That's true of borders, and it's true of travel in general.

I took this photo on my own trip to Belfast โ€” and it's a perfect example of why the UK entry rules matter right now, even for travellers who think they're "just passing through."

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. And as of January 2025, Americans need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel there โ€” or anywhere else in the UK.

Here's what you need to know:

**Visiting the UK** (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
โ†’ UK ETA is required. Apply online before you travel โ€” it costs ยฃ16, takes up to 3 working days, and is valid for 2 years.
โ†’ No, it's not a visa. Think of it like the US ESTA, but for Britain.

**Transiting through a UK airport** (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, etc.)
โ†’ This is where it gets nuanced โ€” and where people get caught out.
โ†’ If you stay fully airside (following "Flight Connections" signs, no passport control), you generally don't need an ETA at Heathrow or Manchester.
โ†’ But if your bags aren't checked through to your final destination, you need to collect and recheck them โ€” and that forces you landside through immigration, where an ETA is required.
โ†’ Missed connections, overnight delays, or terminal changes can also force a landside situation you didn't plan for. Many Americans apply for an ETA even when transiting, precisely because travel doesn't always go to plan.
โ†’ My advice: if there's any chance you'll pass through UK passport control, just get the ETA. It's simple and inexpensive.

**Ireland (Republic of)** ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช
โ†’ Ireland does NOT require an ETA โ€” it's a completely separate system. No pre-authorisation needed for Americans visiting Dublin, Cork, or anywhere in the Republic.

**Combining UK + Ireland or UK + Europe?**
โ†’ Each leg has its own entry requirements. This is exactly the kind of multi-country complexity a travel advisor untangles for you before it becomes a problem.

The news about European travel changes has been everywhere lately โ€” and honestly, most of it is creating more panic than necessary.

Here's what you actually need to know as of right now:

โœ… You can still travel to Schengen countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and more) visa-free for up to 90 days. That hasn't changed.

โœ… ETIAS โ€” the new travel authorisation you've been hearing about โ€” is NOT yet in effect. It's expected at this point in time in April 2026 at the earliest, and it has been delayed multiple times.

โš ๏ธ What IS already in place: The Entry/Exit System (EES) launched in October 2025. This replaces the old passport stamp with biometric scanning โ€” your fingerprints, facial image, and passport details are collected digitally on first entry.

โš ๏ธ Travelling to the UK? The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is already required and has been since 2025. This is separate from Europe's systems.

The bottom line: Europe is very much open for Americans. The new systems add a small layer of preparation, not a barrier.

If you're planning a trip and want to make sure you're entry-ready โ€” especially if you're visiting multiple countries โ€” that's exactly the kind of detail I help my clients sort through.

Tahiti is on a lot of bucket lists. ๐ŸŒŠ

And it stays there.

Not because people don't want to go. But because it feels like a destination that exists for other people โ€” the ones who somehow just know which island to choose, which resort, which time of year, how to make the logistics actually work.

For everyone else it stays as a saved post and a quiet "one day."

Here's what I want you to know.

Tahiti is more within reach than you think. And when it's planned well โ€” the right islands, the right property, the right people on the ground โ€” it becomes something you talk about for the rest of your life.

And here's the part that might surprise you.

It's one of the most naturally introverted luxury experiences on the planet.

Your own overwater bungalow. Suspended above a lagoon so clear you can see the coral from your pillow. Your own deck. Your own ladder into the water. Meals on your terrace. The sound of the Pacific and nothing else.

Nobody expecting anything from you. No lobby to navigate. No communal anything unless you choose it.
Just you and one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I have supplier relationships across the islands and a local expert in Papeete who knows French Polynesia from the inside out. If Tahiti has been sitting on your list โ€” let's make it more than a saved post.

What's the destination that's been on your bucket list the longest? Drop it below ๐Ÿ‘‡

A client came to me recently with their flights all sorted. ๐Ÿ›ซ

They'd done their research. Compared prices. Found a connection that worked. They were proud of it โ€” and honestly, why wouldn't they be?

One hour and five minutes to transit through Charles de Gaulle in Paris. In summer.

I had to make a phone call.

Here's what the booking sites don't tell you about CDG. It's one of the busiest airports in the world. The terminals aren't connected the way you'd expect. Clearing immigration, collecting bags, rechecking, clearing security โ€” that's not a one hour job on a quiet Tuesday in February. In summer? With every other traveller in Europe doing the same thing?

That connection wasn't a bargain. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

This is what I do that a booking site can't.

I know which airports give you enough time and which ones punish optimism. I know which carriers are reliable on long haul routes. I know that the cheapest connection is rarely the one you want to be standing in when your next flight is boarding.

Booking international air isn't just about finding a price. It's about knowing what happens after you click confirm.

If you've ever spent an hour on Google Flights and still weren't sure if you made the right choice โ€” that's exactly what I'm here for.

Drop a comment or send me a message and let's talk about your next trip. ๐Ÿ‘‡

I'm going to be honest with you about this one. ๐Ÿจ

From the outside, Embassy Suites Downtown San Diego doesn't sell itself. Large pillars, a darker-than-expected lobby. First impression after a long journey? Not quite what you were hoping for.

But then you walk in. And it opens up.

The interior atrium is spacious, airy, and surprisingly quiet for a downtown hotel. It's the kind of space that makes you stop and recalibrate โ€” because it's genuinely nothing like what the exterior promised.

I visited last week as part of a private site inspection with a small group of fellow travel advisors. Here's what I think you actually need to know:

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Every room is a suite โ€” separate living area and bedroom, which makes a real difference when you're travelling with family or just need space to decompress
๐Ÿณ Breakfast is included every morning โ€” one less thing to think about
๐Ÿท There's a 90 minute manager's reception each evening โ€” complimentary drinks and snacks before dinner
๐ŸŒ… Around 25โ€“30% of rooms have balconies โ€” the ones with a view are genuinely worth requesting
๐Ÿšข It's walkable to Seaport Village and an easy stroll to the cruise terminal

For families, or anyone planning a pre or post cruise stay in San Diego, this one deserves a serious look.

Just ask for a balcony room with a view. Trust me on that one. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Have you ever stayed somewhere that surprised you once you got inside? I'd love to hear it ๐Ÿ‘‡

You finally made it to Europe. โœˆ๏ธ

Fourteen hours in the air. A connection that felt like its own endurance event. You're exhausted in every cell of your body.

And then you check in โ€” and instead of a refuge, you get a queue, background music nobody asked for, and someone running through the same six sentences they've said a hundred times today.

You're not a guest. You're a booking reference.

For introverted and anxious travelers, that moment doesn't just sting. It breaks something. You've spent every last reserve getting there.

The right accommodation after a long haul looks like this:
โœ”๏ธ A calm, quiet space to arrive into
โœ”๏ธ Someone who sees you โ€” not just your reservation
โœ”๏ธ A room that's ready, not a lobby to navigate
โœ”๏ธ Information that's there when you need it โ€” not performed at you
โœ”๏ธ The sense that you can finally, finally stop

You shouldn't arrive at your destination already needing a holiday from getting there.

That's exactly why I'm particular about the accommodation I recommend to my clients. The details matter.

Have you ever arrived somewhere after a long haul and felt instantly at home? What made the difference? ๐Ÿ‘‡
