Ever wondered what these bumps are on a humpback? They’re called tubercles! A couple days ago this particular whale was rolling around in the kelp and “spy hopping” showing them off!

These bumps are actually an oversized hair follicle that contains a hair or two (called vibrissae) surrounded by a network of super sensitive nerves! Many researchers believe that humpbacks could be using the tubercles to sense vibrations in the water to create a better idea of what’s around them!

We’ve been seeing humpbacks, blue whales, and fin whales! 🐳 🐋 It’s a perfect time of the year to come out whale watching on the Legacy!

The last couple of days have been nothing short of magical! ✨

With a huge amount of bait in the water just a couple miles west of mission bay, we have been experiencing multiple humpbacks, fin whales, and thousands of dolphins every single day!

Happy Saturday!

This AM trip had amazing interactions with a breaching humpback celebrating his lunch!

We have been seeing humpbacks everyday on every trip for the last couple of days due to all the bait fish in our waters.

Both our am and pm trip got the chance to see multiple humpbacks and too many dolphins to count! 🩵🐋

The last few days have been filled with beautiful weather, and so much wildlife!
