La Jolla: Evolutionary And Revolutionary

In the not-so-distant past, or even today for that matter, La Jolla, much like other mostly urban portions of the country was itself delicately dealing with a whispered and shadowy anti-semitism.

In the mid-century even real estate agents were willing parties to selective exclusion, though not necessarily guided by any ideology. It was recently revealed to us that the Jewish community in the ‘60s had another name for La Jolla – La Goya.

It wasn’t until the founder of UCSD, Roger Revelle, discovered that the best educators to staff his nascent faculty were to be found on the East Coast and in the Jewish community. Through his hiring Roger Revelle single-handedly altered the residential and to a degree the cultural landscape of The Jewel.

We invite you to discover an important part of La Jolla’s history as witnessed by La Jolla Insider and resident Anne Arenson Winter.

Tim Moore Hosts Spectacular Opening Night Of Cabaret Singing At The Living Room In La Jolla, CA

Written by Mike Mazaika

“I had the privilege of witnessing a dazzling spectacle on the opening night of cabaret singing at Sam Azzu’s Living Room on Prospect Street. The star-studded event, hosted by the renowned Tim Moore, brought together a diverse array of talent from musical theatre, traditional cabaret, and operatic backgrounds for an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

From the moment the doors opened, excitement filled the air as guests eagerly awaited the performances that promised to captivate and delight. The packed house was treated to a showcase of incredible talent, with singers ranging in age from 9 to 70+ delivering mesmerizing renditions of beloved standards and fresh theatrical pieces.

The atmosphere was electric, with the intimate setting of the newly renovated Living Room providing the perfect backdrop for an evening of unforgettable performances. As the audience cheered and applauded, it was clear that a new hotspot for entertainment had been born in La Jolla.”

“La Jolla Is The Green Dragon And The Green Dragon Is La Jolla.”
The San Francisco Chronicle, 1901″

La Jolla Insiders subscribe to the responsibility mantra of “leaving a place, or thing, better than you found it.” Whether or not Anna Held Heinrich was motivated by that sentiment isn’t important; perhaps it was only good fortune that her actions positively and directly impacted La Jolla’s cultural history when she hired a young man who would become one of California’s greatest architects – Irving Gill – who would later design the La Jolla Recreation Center, early Bishop’s School buildings, the Women’s Club and the home of Ellen Browning Scripps, years later becoming the now completely remodeled Museum of Contemporary Art, a La Jolla icon.

Arriving in La Jolla in 1893 as the governess for the children of the U.S. Grant, Jr. family, Anna saved her salary and wisely invested $165 in a land purchase and then built twelve small hillside cottages near the La Jolla Cove naming them the Green Dragon Colony. Eleven of the cottages were demolished by 1990 with the remnants of one remains tucked inside the structure at 1270 Prospect St.

It’s a great spot to work on your laptop with a cappuccino or one of their specialty “adult coffee” drinks 😊

It was a bit early for us today but we will definitely be back to try their famous “Creamsicle” beverage (cold brew + cream + vanilla + vodka + Kahlua + orange peel 😃).

The decor of this new establishment is worth checking out! The attention to detail is phenomenal.

Thanks to Chris for having us! Amazing service. See you again soon.
