Brocken Spectre: Richard spotted this rare natural phenomenon over the Pacific Ocean recently, as his plane approached San Francisco to land. This was the third time he had seen it from a plane. His first spotting completely freaked him out, as it took place (many years ago) when he was climbing Mt. Olympus in Washington State. Near the summit, he emerged from the clouds and was stunned to look a mile across the Blue Glacier and see his shadow on a peak, thousands of feet high, completely inside a 'glory' - circular rainbow. Curious to know what it was called, his research led him to naturalist John Muir, who described the phenomenon in his 1912 classic travel guide, The Yosemite.
