Our mathematician guest wanted to view the oculus from the top floor to get a better look at the elliptical symmetry. I was happy to accompany her 🤗

I had been meaning to visit the State Capitol for quite some time and finally managed to do so on this trip.

Of course, I had visited before on a school field trip but that was years ago…

Hawaii State Capitol
Architect: Belt, Lemmon & Lo and John Carl Warnecke & Associates
Year: 1969

From Wikipedia:

The Hawaii State Capitol is an American adaptation of the Bauhaus style termed "Hawaiian international architecture". Unlike other state capitols modeled after the United States Capitol, the Hawaii State Capitol's distinct architectural features symbolize various natural aspects of Hawaii.

Some of the features seen in these photos:

The columns around the perimeter of the building have shapes resembling royal palm trees. There are eight columns in four rows at either side of the building, representing the eight main islands of Hawaii; sets of eight items appear in other places inside and along the outside of the building.

The Capitol is built with an open-air design, allowing sun, wind, and rain to enter; the central atrium opens to the sky and rainbows can sometimes be seen inside the building when it rains.

Just back from a brief Century City staycation with my daughter and we both had a grand time 😊

We stayed at a hotel designed by Minoru Yamasaki.

The mesh sculpture “Laura” in image 2 is by artist Jaume Plensa.

From website:

Opened in 1966 as the centerpiece of Century City, the 19-story curved hotel has been a prominent Los Angeles landmark for more than four decades. From its prime perch fronting the spectacular fountains on the Avenue of the Stars, the Century Plaza’s sweeping modern design strongly evokes the exuberant optimism of the 1960s. Designed by renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki, who would later design New York’s World Trade Center twin towers, the hotel incorporates Yamasaki’s ornamental, textural and sculptural trademarks. Yamasaki also designed the 1975 twin Century Plaza towers, the striking triangular buildings east of the hotel.

I had to take care of a bill and the gentleman who helped me asked if I had any plans afterwards. I said that I was going to the Norton Simon and how cool that the museum is open on Mondays. I mention their world class art and all the reasons why I like to visit. I bet he will visit one day soon!

The showcase art in the foyer has changed to this modern acrylic “Color Temperature” by Kenneth Nolan (1984). 💙 his work

Outside the sunlight was quite bright and cast strong shadows onto the Heath tiles.

It’s been awhile since I posted a Salk photo…

This was taken in Feb. 2020 and frames different views: the plaza, a study tower south of the plaza and the covered walkway under the north study towers. I like the bits of blue sky that peek through.

A friend recommended that I visit the Pasadena Conservatory of Music where she had taken piano lessons as an adult. I made it there this week for a hard hat tour of the new music learning center and amphitheater to be completed in spring 2025.

I also got to tour the existing building, a mortuary at one time, that was renovated in 2015. The current recital hall used to be the mortuary chapel.

From the ARG website:

The first phase of improvements, completed in early 2015, included the adaptive reuse of the existing chapel into a two-story Recital Hall, along with site infrastructure, access, and parking lot improvements to immediately start unifying the campus. The Recital Hall provides a signature performance space for the Conservatory, with a mix of fixed seating on risers and movable chairs, balanced acoustics, and up-to-date sound and lighting systems.
