Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative

Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative We are using two tagging methods to accomplish this: Floy tagging (tag-recapture) and acoustic telemetry. Thank you!

We created a cooperative fisheries research initiative between marine scientists, the recreational fishing community, fisheries managers, and non-profit organizations to improve upon our knowledge of the biology of marine fishes in southern California. The goal of this research is to measure population size, mortality, and movement patterns of all three bass species (calico bass, sand bass, and sp

otted bay bass) in southern California. Our efforts are primarily focused in the San Diego coastal area, but we are expanding to include Newport Bay and Long Beach Harbor as well. We invite anyone who is interested to come out on our tagging charters for free, and participate in the research. Contact us if you would like to be added to the email list for charter updates.

Another successful year of San Diego CCFRP in the books! On August 23rd, the Scripps Oceanography team finished the year strong in the Swami’s SMCA with a total of 121 fish, 56 caught in the MPA and 65 caught in the reference sites. Here’s some highlights!

Another great week of sampling for Scripps CCFRP in the Swami’s State Marine Conservation Area! Although overcast and rainy at times, ocean conditions were wonderfully flat on August 8th and August 9th, making for smooth sailing aboard the Sea Star with Captain Joe and deckhand Bobby. Between the two trips, the team caught a total of 262 fishes, 212 inside the MPA and 50 in nearby reference sites. Our catch consisted of 19 different species, including a Cabezon and a large 110 cm California Halibut caught by Joe C. (not pictured) ! We continued to collect samples for our eDNA (environmental DNA) pilot program and are excited to start processing samples soon! Enjoy some highlights from our time on the water! Photos from technician and photographer Ashlynn C.

CCFRP sampling in San Diego has begun! On July 12th, UC San Diego CCFRP science crew, captains, deckhands, and volunteer anglers had a great day on the Outer Limits, catching a total of 184 fish across 18 different species. In addition to our hook-and-line surveys, this year we are also launching our new eDNA pilot project! eDNA (or environmental DNA) is DNA shed by organisms into the marine environment. By pairing eDNA water samples with CCFRP hook-and-line surveys, we hope to identify an even greater diversity of fishes and better understand the capabilities of this emerging sampling technique! Stay tuned for more details about this new side project! Thank you to our great volunteers who helped us out this week, and our wonderful photographer Ashlynn C.

On August 4th and 5th, the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) completed two more sampling trips aboard Outer Limits Charters. We had a fantastic couple of days on the water, catching a total of 217 fishes across 19 different species. The catch of the week was a 49 cm Vermilion Rockfish, caught on a swim bait. Huge thanks to Kevin Nguyen, who served as our photographer and took some awesome action shots. Thanks again to all of our volunteers who helped out this week!

On July 20th and 21st, the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) completed another set of MPA monitoring trips aboard Sea Star Sportfishing. Between the two trips, we caught a total of 93 fishes of 13 different species. 70 fishes were caught inside the MPA, while 23 were caught in the reference sites. A huge thank you to all our volunteers who helped with this week's efforts!

On July 13th and 15th, we completed another set of California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) charters aboard Outer Limits Charters. Over 2 days of fishing, we caught 244 fishes of 17 different species. 142 fishes were caught inside the MPA and 102 were caught inside reference sites. The biggest fish was a 53 cm (~21 in) lingcod caught by Sebastian L.

A few interesting things occurred on July 15th. We recaptured a honeycomb rockfish and a rosy rockfish both originally tagged-and-released on the same drift EXACTLY one year ago in the exact same location. Both fish did not grow.

ONCE AGAIN, we recaptured a California Scorpionfish only a minute after we had originally tagged and released it. If you're fishing in La Jolla, be on the lookout for some hungry California scorpionfish!

We completed another California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) charter on July 7th aboard Outer Limits Charters. Wayne Kotow from Coastal Conservation Association of California joined us and brought some goodies for us to give away througout the season. The MPA sites were slow for us today, producing 29 fishes while the reference sites produced 58 fishes for a total of 87 fishes from 13 species. While every trip helps us collect valuable data, any one trip won’t capture the bigger picture. The highlight today was when a 32 cm California scorpionfish was tagged and released only to be recaptured again no more than 2 minutes later. We had Kevin Nguyen aboard as our photographer; he took some AMAZING photos, so make sure to take a look below!

On July 6th, we completed our first California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) survey of the year at South La Jolla aboard Outer Limits Charters. We caught-and-released 111 fishes of 16 different species. 73 were caught in the MPA and 38 were caught in our reference sites. Biggest fish on the day was a 42 cm kelp bass! We also recaptured one of our tagged ocean whitefish, which was originally tagged-and-released back in 2019.
