There are sporting venues. And then there is the MCG!

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, capacity 100,000, opened 1853, host of two Olympic Games, countless Ashes series, and the AFL Grand Final every single year, is not just a stadium. It is a national shrine.

Australian Rules Football is like nothing else on earth. I now completely understand why Melburnians plan their entire week around it.

Every great city has that one neighborhood that captures its true soul. In Melbourne, it's Fitzroy!

Victorian-era cottages with ornate iron lacework sitting directly alongside independent galleries, vintage stores, and cafés so good they don't need signs. Trams everywhere, including, apparently, on rooftops. Heritage pubs with live music spilling onto the footpath. The magnificent Flinders Street Station anchoring it all at one end.

Fitzroy pays tribute to Melbourne's Aboriginal history and its immigrant communities in ways you feel in the fabric of the streets themselves: in the architecture, the art, the faces you see.

If you want to understand Melbourne, you have to go into the laneways!

Hosier Lane is the most famous, layers upon layers of street art, constantly changing, every surface covered in something extraordinary.

Paste-ups, stencils, murals, tags, political commentary, absurdist humor, raw beauty.

Then around the corner: AC/DC Lane, named for Australia's greatest rock band, with its own wall-to-wall gallery of works.
And it's not just Hosier.

Every laneway in Melbourne's CBD holds something. A rat the size of a Volkswagen. A woman emerging from smoke. An alien parrot in sunglasses. Cole's Book Arcade. The "Palace of Intellect." You could spend three days in these lanes and still not see everything.

Melbourne has made its streets into a living, breathing gallery: and entry is always free.

Melbourne is an open-air architecture museum.

The Manchester Unity Building, one of Australia's finest examples of Gothic Revival commercial architecture, built in 1932.

The Oddfellows Hall with its extraordinary ornate banking chamber. Gewürzhaus Herb & Spice Merchants tucked into a heritage arcade. Carved wooden doors that belong in a cathedral. A 1930s escalator still running.

This city layered centuries of architecture one on top of another and somehow made it all work together. Every block you turn, something extraordinary.
