GAPA - Building QTAPI Community Since 1988

GAPA - Building QTAPI Community Since 1988 GAPA envisions a powerful Q***r Trans Asian and Pacific Islander community that is seen, heard, and celebrated.

GAPA was formed from the need for an organization to address, through a democratic process, social, cultural and political issues affecting the gay & bisexual Asian/Pacific Islander community. In July 1987, several members from the Asian Gay Men's Support Group at Berkeley's Pacific Center met and discussed the need to integrate and nurture a growing gay & bisexual Asian/Pacific Islander identity

and to foster positive role models within our community. After several monthly meetings and a business retreat, the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance was formally organized in January 1988. In February 2021, at the recommendation of the board at the first membership meeting of the year, GAPA has been renamed to GLBTQ+ Asian Pacific Alliance. This name change reflects our commitment to inclusion of the entire Q***r and Trans Asian and Pacific Islander (QTAPI) community. Although based in San Francisco, GAPA serves communities all over the Bay Area and beyond. To join us, please visit: https://www.gapa.org/join-us

GAPA's annual Pageant returns, and this year's theme is Forces of Nature.

Nature's greatest forces are powerful, transformative, and impossible to ignore. They shape landscapes, weather storms, carve mountains, and create new worlds. Like the forces of nature, our community embodies resilience, strength, beauty, and change.

Whether you draw inspiration from the fury of a thunderstorm, the calm persistence of the ocean, the rebirth of a forest after fire, or the brilliance of the northern lights, we invite you to interpret this theme in your own unique way.

Show us your creativity, share your story, harness your power. Are you ready to become a Force of Nature?

Applications are now open. We can't wait to see what you bring to the stage.

The deadline for application is July 5, 2026.

GOODLUCK!!!

Exhibition Statement: Showcasing the works of Q***r and Trans Asian and Pacific Islander (QTAPI) artists, Holding (Q***r) Space invites us to reflect on our relationships with each other as QTAPI in the diaspora by exploring what it means to take up space and practice placemaking for others. Whether it’s found within, among chosen family, or in the community-at-large, featured artists celebrate modes of thinking about connection through shared experiences and histories, underscoring how QTAPI solidarity can cultivate placemaking and belonging. By sharing our perspectives, we create common ground where people can come together across generations, cultures, and identities. These acts of visibility foster pride, reduce isolation, and affirm that our lives and experiences matter.
