I always love to hear about the history behind the landmarks!

🌉 San Francisco once built an entire island in the middle of the Bay—and then covered it with a World’s Fair.

On February 18, 1939, the Golden Gate International Exposition opened on Treasure Island. The fair celebrated the engineering achievements of the new Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge while promoting an optimistic vision of Pacific trade, transportation, culture, and international cooperation. Treasure Island itself was extraordinary. The flat artificial island had been constructed on filled shoals and was envisioned as the future location of San Francisco’s municipal airport once the fair ended. World War II changed those plans, and the island instead became a major U.S. Navy installation. (SF Media API)

For two seasons—1939 and 1940—its temporary palaces, sculptures, gardens, entertainment, transportation exhibits, and glowing Tower of the Sun created a spectacular city in the middle of San Francisco Bay. (The Library of Congress)

Much of that fair vanished.

But Treasure Island itself remained.
