The Navajo Nation has been expanding Navajo (Diné) language immersion education programs in an effort to preserve and revitalize the Navajo language among younger generations.

Several schools across the Navajo Nation — including programs operated by Navajo Nation Department of Diné Education — use Diné language immersion models, where students learn core subjects while primarily speaking Navajo in the classroom. These programs aim to reverse the long-term decline in Native language speakers.

According to Navajo Nation education initiatives and linguistic research, the number of fluent Navajo speakers has declined over recent decades, especially among youth. Language immersion schools are designed to strengthen fluency while reconnecting students with Diné culture, history, and traditional knowledge.

Educators and tribal leaders say expanding these programs is a key step toward protecting Indigenous languages, which are considered essential to cultural identity and sovereignty.

(The TSA told me that a shiny wardrobe will set off the alarms on the body scanners and I shouldn't wear them when flying. I've heard that before. This isn't the first nor the last time I've alarmed the body scanners.)
