Would you hike 5,000 feet down into the Grand Canyon with a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old?

Neli and her family did.

After years of trying to get a permit, we finally had the chance to camp at the bottom of the Grand Canyon — which meant figuring out how to get two very young hikers from the South Rim all the way down to the Colorado River.

About 7 miles. Nearly 5,000 feet of elevation loss. Desert heat. A few unexpected trail closures. And two little kids who somehow made the whole adventure even more memorable.

Stan just published Part I of our Grand Canyon Rim-to-River story on the Iris & Poppy blog. He dives into the planning, the permit process, the history of the South Kaibab Trail, how we chose our route, and some of the decisions that went into attempting a trip like this with young kids.
