Had a really random memory run through my head last week; Who remembers "bakery thrift stores?" SLO had a Webers / Dolly Madison store on Higuera (now a mechanics shop). There was also a Wonder Bread / Hostess store at the corner of Halcyon and Grand in A.G. (now a liquor store). As a kid, I called them "used bread stores." My earliest memory of them was my Mom taking me to the Webers store in SLO to get a couple of 40-cent loaves of bread and take them to Laguna Lake to feed the ducks and geese. Not sure ducks and geese are supposed to eat white bread, but they never turned it down. They sold "short dated" bread, and fresh "overstock" bread. I don't think anything in the store was more than $1.50. Nowadays good luck getting a loaf of bread under $5. Webers and Dolly Madison themselves are a long gone memory.

Two years closed? It's about time it reopened. I find it funny that a State with such a large budget surplus can allow popular State Parks to be shuttered for so long. https://ktla.com/news/california/californias-hearst-castle-is-reopening-after-2-year-closure/ #

After a two-year closure, Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County is set to reopen this May, California State Parks announced Thursday. The Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, a historic h…

So this year (at least since Cal Poly started their winter break last Friday), I've noticed a large number of people parked at the Cerro San Luis (Madonna Mountain) trailhead parking lot after dark. Almost as many as I would expect to see there on a summertime Saturday or Sunday. Are they hiking up to see Madonna's Christmas "tree?" Think before Christmas I'll take a hike up there one evening myself to investigate. Video to follow soon.

Better hurry up if you plan to see Bruce Munro's Sensorio light display before it's gone. I do believe they are supposed to take everything down around January 15th 2020.

“Field of Light at Sensorio,” an intersection of art, technology and nature by Bruce Munro, is now open to the public through January 5, 2020.
