LevinO Photography

LevinO Photography I'm passionate about photography. This is the means by which I am able to express myself artistically. My "photographic eye" is eclectic.

My goal is to share with others the beauty I see around me, as I see it through my mind's eye. What started out as a project to save family photos is evolving into a passion. I'm still experimenting, working to find out who I am photographically. Please come in and join the journey with me. My "photographic eye" is eclectic, whatever attracts my curiosity. You are welcome to view my history and th

at of my family through old photos I've discovered and restored. And to share in my life's adventures through the years. My fun site is the Mountain Olson Website (http://www.mtnolson.com/), and is where I get to tell stories of my adventures and share with friends and family.

One of the most fascinating stops along the river was Clonmacnoise.
Clonmacnoise is a ruined monastery in County Offaly in Ireland on the River Shannon south of Athlone, founded in 544 by Saint Ciarán.
Saint Ciarán founded the monastery in the ancient territory of Uí Maine at a point where the major east–west land route meets the River Shannon after crossing the bogs of Central Ireland known as the Esker Riada. The strategic location of the monastery helped it become a major center of religion, learning, craftsmanship and trade by the 9th century; and together with Clonard it was one of the most famous places in Ireland, visited by scholars from all over Europe. From the ninth until the eleventh century it was allied with the kings of Meath. Many of the high kings of Tara and of Connacht were buried here.

Our first stop was the little town of Drumsna, where we spent the first night in the boat. The harbour dates to 1817 and was a hive of commercial waterway activity until the more northern navigation canal to Carrick-on-Shannon was opened in 1850.

After my niece and her husband joined us, we took the train to Carrick-On-Shannon. This is where we picked up our rental boat the next day. We were told to beware of the "hens" and "stags" while there. It turns out this little town, by tradition, is where bachelor and bachelorette parties are held before they return and get married.

Across the footbridge from Christ Church is Dublinia, a historical recreation (or living history) museum and visitor attraction in Dublin, Ireland, focusing on the Viking and Medieval history of the city. Dublinia is located in a part of Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral, known as the Synod hall.
The original building was the first christian church in Dublin, founded by the Vikings.

We are off to Trinity College for a day.
Trinity was established to consolidate the rule of the Tudor monarchy in Ireland, with Provost Adam Loftus christening it after Trinity College, Cambridge. Built on the site of the former Priory of All Hallows demolished by King Henry VIII, it was the Protestant university of the Ascendancy ruling elite for over two centuries, and was therefore associated with social elitism for most of its history.
The college contains several landmarks such as the Campanile, the GMB, and The Rubrics, as well as the historic Old Library. Trinity's legal deposit library serves both Ireland and the United Kingdom, and has housed the Book of Kells since 1661, the Brian Boru harp since 1782, and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic since 1916. Trinity also houses the world's oldest student society, The Hist, which was founded in 1770.

I'm giving up on trying to create a BLOG or a story book of the recent trip to Ireland. Even FB albums are very rigid in what can be done. So, there will just be a series of image postings based on places we went. These are all a combination of images from both of us.
If there are detailed explanations, they will be a part of each picture. Otherwise just enjoy the journey.
This first one id Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen. A partial collapse in the 16th century left it in poor shape and the building was extensively renovated and rebuilt in the late 19th century, giving it the form it has today, including the tower, flying buttresses, and distinctive covered footbridge.
