I have been working hard on my property in beautiful SE Arizona creating habitat for gorgeous birds and a potential Airbnb for birders. All the while doing this I established a youtube site to share films I have made over the years. Currently I am featuring Australia- Discovering the World of Parrots. These beautiful threatened Glossy-black Cockatoos were spotted by Rebecca of Lake Cargelligo Birds foraging for their favorite food, Casuarina seeds. A native tree to Australia, Casuarina looks a bit like North American pine trees and is their primary food. Of course that makes them very vulnerable and fires and tree-cutting can wreak havoc with their food supply.

Remember in Major Mitchells Cockatoos you can s*x them by eye color. Here the male at Lake Cargelligo Aus is demanding his turn at the favorite chew tree. His female companion waits casually by for her turn. He is a bit of a grump when it comes to this tree and gets bossy and pushes her away when he wants a turn. Can you imagine what it's like during this complicated period of time to be able to just walk to see several different species of parrots including these in your yard! It's well documented that some of the big Australian cockatoos love some meat in their diet. For example Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos chew into trees to extract grubs. Cockatoo lover Bec at Lake Cargelligo recently observed Majors taking turns and spending a lot of time chewing at a specific spot. Anyone have any input as to if they might be extracting larvae. It's one of those periods that I dream of spending time with beautiful little birds like these. I have yet to get my fill of Turquoise parrots in the wild. Something about these gentle little colorful birds that to me just invites me to want to indulge more and more time with them. These were filmed near Glenrowan in VIC Australia

Circa 1983. Hitchhiking/Traveling in Cape Tribulation in Queensland. Filming Australian birds for the first time in my life and joining with Aussie friends on a night-lighting excursion to "look for things". This beautiful scrub python was found only a few meters down the path from our accommodation at the Youth Hostel. It was later released none the worse for wear. Australia - the land of adventure!

Naturally when we are hunting for stellar views of gorgeous parrots it's easy to be distracted by so many other interesting birds!
