Hey Sailor!

Sailors and Friends of Sailing, our Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association 2016 membership drive is underway and we ask your support of sailing on Deep Creek Lake by joining DCYRA as an Active, Youth, Junior, or Sponsoring member before May 1st, at a discount!

As you know, DCYRA exists to support racing on Deep Creek Lake and our whole budget supports racing, sailing development, and sailing promotion. We need your help to support the sport we all love by having fun on the lake, developing new sailors, and protecting the lake as a sailing resource. Please join today. Your membership makes a difference! The registration form can be found on the DCYRA website at http://www.dcyra.com/registration-form.html, or by contacting the DCYRA Treasurer Alan Silverman at [email protected]

Your membership helps us conduct great events like the Sandy Douglass Regatta, the Laser Invitational, the new Women's and Juniors Seminars, and our exciting brand-new in 2016 regatta, the Fair Winds. Joining only takes a minute but has a real and lasting impact on sailing here on the lake - please be part of maintaining Deep Creek Lake as one of the best mountain lake sailing venues on the East coast. It's up to us - let's do this!

This year, we are particularly soliciting Sponsoring Memberships from those of you who may not yet be or may no longer be actively sailing, but still want to support the DCYRA sailing programs on the lake. Sponsoring membership, available at whatever donation level you can contribute, is a great way to keep those boats out on the lake - please consider joining as a Sponsoring Member.

Thanks to those of you who have already joined and looking forward to seeing you on the water this year...

Marty Hill
President, DCYRA

Come out and join the Scot and Laser Racing Fleets for 2016!

The 2016 Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association (DCYRA) Race Calendar is out at: http://www.dcyra.com/flying-scot-and-laser-schedule-2016.html

DCYRA runs Flying Scot and Laser races every weekend and most Wednesdays throughout June, July, and August. Sailors new to racing can join the Flying Scot Challenger fleet where the emphasis is on learning and fun. More advanced racers can join the competitive, but still fun, silver or gold fleets.

Sailors must be registered with DCYRA to race. Online registration and fee information is at: http://www.dcyra.com/registration-form.html . All sailors are welcome to join DCYRA and race whether you are a member of one of the yacht clubs or not. The club does not rent boats, so you must have access to a Flying Scot or Laser to race.

New sailors who want to race can take lessons with the Deep Creek Sailing School http://www.dclsailingschool.com, or just come out and learn by serving as crew. If you're interested in crewing opportunities, subscribe and post your interest to the club's google group at: [email protected].
For current Flying Scot owners who are interested in trying racing for the first time, the club can find you an experienced skipper to ride along on your first few races to help you learn the ropes. We have a lot of fun out there, and you're likely to get hooked once you try your first race, so give it a shot!

Looks like we have three, possibly four boats from DCYRA headed down to Fall 48 at Lake Norman next week. Looking forward to the last sailing of the year.

Belated thanks to Fleet 42 out of Selby Bay on the South River for putting on the Capitol Districts a few weeks back. The regatta had been delayed several times due to weather, and in the end we were only able to get one and a half races in due to increasing winds, but the racing was fast and furious in the whitecaps, and we (6097) managed to pull off a third place out of a pretty tough crowd. Mark Vieno came out of semi-retirement to crew for me and acquitted himself and Fleet 6 with great aplomb. Highly recommended regatta for those looking for a late Fall regatta in the DC area.

We had two boats from Fleet 6 show up for the annual Presidents Cup Regatta hosted by the Potomac River Sailing Association. They were skippered by Eric von Eckartsberg (Justin Burnham, crew) and David Meehan (Greg Shafer, crew). It was a great event with numerous one designs represented including Albacores, Buccaneers (arrrg), Lightnings and, of course, Flying Scots. There were six Scots in competition with great winds both Saturday and Sunday. In fact, it was gusting over 20 MPH before the first race on Sunday.

The competition between the DCL boats was quite good with Eric winning the first thee races on Saturday with David in second. They swapped positions for the last race of the day. The winds were quite tricky with one Interlaken 20 capsizing during a race and had a difficult time getting righted again. Thank goodness for the ease with which a Scot can be self rescued.

On Sunday, there were three races with David Meehan winning all three and the regatta. Eric continued his strong finishes to take second for the regatta. David was even able to recover from a poorly tied spinnaker sheet that came undone (sorry about that David).

Kudos to David Beckett and his son who sailed hard but finished third. David lost his whole rig and sails at the ACCs last weekend and was sailing a club boat with recreational sails. He’s hoping to get refitted before the Capitol District Championships next weekend at Selby Bay. Good luck David!
