Our family loves to shell. Some of my sweetest memories are from maternity leave, walking the shoreline with the boys tucked into a pouch on my chest. When it was only JJ, mom and I would walk the beach every morning looking for shells. Then, as JJ grew older, he would carefully hunt for shells while Caiden snoozed through the adventure. Then Callie came along — the boys shelled, she slept, and we just kept walking.

I think it was all that fresh air, movement, and time together that sparked their love for it.

On our most recent trip, we found an unbelievable number of sea urchins — just lying right on the beach! They’ll need a little brushing, but look how gorgeous they are. Nature’s treasures never disappoint.

There’s just something special about slowing down, walking the coastline, and seeing what the tide brings in. It’s more than shelling — it’s memory-making. 💛

More unique finds:

What you see is the egg case of a whelk (a type of sea snail).

Whelks lay long, coiled strings of capsule-like segments that look exactly like that ridged, flexible spiral. Each little compartment originally held developing baby snails. After they hatch, the empty casing often washes up looking rubbery and translucent like this.

You might hear people call them:
• Whelk egg casing
• Sea snail egg string
• Mermaid’s necklace (a common nickname)
