Not something you see every day… 🦆🌿 I spotted this beautiful Black-Bellied Whistling Duck tucked away in a tree, and I think she may have been a mama nesting with her eggs. ❤️ Nature is pretty amazing when you slow down and look around!
Some interesting facts about the Black Bellied Whistling Ducks:
🪺 They often nest in tree cavities, sometimes 20–30 feet above the ground, rather than nesting on the ground like many ducks.
🐣 The ducklings are born covered in down and are surprisingly capable from day one.
🪂 When it's time to leave the nest, the babies simply jump! They can tumble or flutter down from the cavity to the ground. It looks terrifying to us, but they're built for it.
❤️ Mom and dad typically stay nearby, and the ducklings follow their parents once they're safely on the ground.
🌳 They are sometimes called "tree ducks" because of their strong association with nesting and roosting in trees.
🔊 And despite their name, they're not especially quiet—their high-pitched whistling calls are one of their trademarks.
