Words & Waves 🪶🌊
“For the ocean, too, is a voice. The sea has many voices—soft whispering, thunderous crashing, the singing of waves against a boat’s hull, the endless sighing retreat of surf along the shore. It is a voice and a presence, immense, unfathomable, and forever calling”
- Henry Beston (“The Outermost House”)

Le Trésor du Ciel Ouvert 🪙⚜️

“The greatest treasure a man can have is the one that cannot be stolen, the one that lives in his heart.”
- Alexandre Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo)

California’s skies have been dealing out the bounty lately with wild consistency. Here are a few wide angle scenes from a scarlet fireshow Santa Barbara put on the other night which had a little extra spice to it 🌶️

“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” 🌅
— St. Francis of Assisi

⛈️⚡️With a Pacific storm surging outside and the rain pelting down, here’s a little throwback to a few mornings of light & color from this prior week 🌅

In California, many of us are stuck in the brooding darkness of a large storm system that’s dumping rain on our typically sunny coasts. We need it, and it’s much preferred to wildfires…It’s also an opportunity to pick up a good books from your library, bust out our often-neglected raincoats, strike up a fire, and lean into the cozy comforts of home with our loved ones & pets.

Personally, I love seeing our beach community from a fresh lens & a reframed perspective, with all the sullen, dramatic rain clouds above and the darkness covering the town like a thick comforter. I’ll always prefer my warm, vibrant sunrise walks, however, and St. Francis’ quote was a helpful reminder of a few important elements when faced with the storms & darkness of our daily lives - that in persistent darkness we must create our own light, but that any light will persist defiantly even in the face of overwhelming darkness, and that, while the storm rages outside, the sun is always there waiting to break through on the other side.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk and hope you enjoy the photos :)

“We all come from the sea, but we are not all of the sea. Those of us who are, we children of the tides, must return to it again and again, until the day we don’t come back, leaving only that which was touched along the way.”

“Why do old men wake so early? Is it to have one longer day?”
- Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea

Contrasts of the coast. A morning with the bright lavender shades of breaking dawn, and another with a colorless, moody silence under heavy fog. This lone fisherman was up early for both, perfecting his craft in the gentle, peaceful hours of the rising sun.

Some absolutely surreal wildfire skies this morning in Santa Barbara, but a solemn reminder of what our friends down south are dealing with...

Thoughts are with all our neighbors and friends in the Los Angeles area, and let’s hope we can get some gentle winds and full containment on this thing…

🔗 Including a link in my story, should anyone feel included to donate and try to help out for our first responders as they battle this horrible wildfire.
