From an easy coastal loop to a challenging all-day adventure, here are 3 trails worth adding to your list:

✨ Cavern Point Loop — 1.8 mi — about 1 hour
🌊 Potato Harbor — ~5 mi — about 2 hours
⛰️ Montañon Ridge — 10+ mi — all day hike

☀️ Pro tip: Bring plenty of water and sun protection — there are no water refill stations along the trails, and shade is very limited.

Meet the Channel Islands’ smelliest acrobat. 🤸‍♂️

Found only on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, the island spotted skunk is one of the park’s most elusive nocturnal mammals. By night, it hunts insects, island deer mice, lizards, and other small prey. During the day, it shelters in dens beneath shrubs, among rocks, and inside hollow tree roots.

Its famous handstand isn’t just for show. Before resorting to its well-known defensive spray, an island spotted skunk will often stomp its front feet, raise its tail, and balance on its front paws as a warning to predators.

As one of only two native terrestrial carnivores on the Channel Islands, the island spotted skunk plays an important role in keeping the ecosystem in balance.
