Join us for a rare night at Lake Cachuma as the full Moon slips into Earth’s shadow — a deep, 93% lunar eclipse that will turn the Moon a smoldering copper-red while the Milky Way and summer constellations emerge around it.

Our PhD student astronomer guide will walk you through the science of the eclipse in real time, share stories of the night sky, and lead telescope viewing of the reddening Moon and other gems above. Hot chocolate & tea, blankets, and chairs provided.

This isn’t our usual night sky tour. We won’t be trying to explain the whole night sky or bringing out our telescope. This will be just the Perseids at their peak, under the darkest sky during this meteor shower in nearly a decade.

We’re planning everything so you have nothing to do but show up and look up. We pick you up at 1:30 AM in downtown Santa Barbara, drive you to a dark sky site, and provide chairs, blankets, cold-weather gear and hot chocolate. Our PhD guide tells you what you’re seeing, then the sky takes over. We’re expecting up to 50–100 meteors an hour.

Make a wish, then another. 💫

The Perseid meteor shower peaks under a new moon this year, the darkest sky in years. We head out just after sunset and expect 5–15 shooting stars an hour. We bring blankets, hot chocolate and tea, and set up the telescope to talk through the wonders of the night sky, with plenty of time left just for staring up.
