Welcome to WTD Now, No Comment.

Paul Gilliam and Mary Oglesby are career bartenders. They opened No Comment on Central Avenue in 2025, and the name is Mary's: you go out, you meet your friends, you drink some w**e, you talk. And when somebody asks what you talked about, you're not supposed to tell them.

In June it became a restaurant. Indian-Italian fusion, fine-casual, in a room they have kept deliberately retro. Main courses come with a hand-selected w**e pairing, and there are flights, house-made w**e coolers and cocktails alongside.

Tied for third, Best New Restaurant, in Memphis magazine's 2026 Readers' Restaurant Poll.

Welcome to WTD Now, Balkan Bakery.

Balkan Bakery in La Grange has just finished a renovation — indoor and outdoor seating, a pergola and patio, new artisan display cases — and not one recipe has changed since 2007.

It started with Olja Igic, who came from Kosovo with thirty-five years in the trade, one small suitcase and a black book of recipes. She opened the bakery with her son Pedja in 2007 and spent thirteen years building it. In 2020 her daughter-in-law Marija Pejkovic took it over when Olja retired, and grew it into a bakery, a café and a Balkan speciality store under one roof.

What to get:

The burek — hand-stretched dough, ground beef or feta imported from Greece, by the slice or as a whole 12-inch pie. Pies come in mushroom, potato, feta, and spinach & feta.
Cakes, pastries, pralines and crepes, all made from scratch.
And the shelves behind it: Eastern European pantry goods, deli, w**e and spirits, gelato and cold-pressed juice.

Coming next month: hot panini and toast sandwiches, salads and snack bowls built on ajvar, kulen and kajmak. Later this year, The Gourmet Vault — their online store shipping Balkan goods nationwide.

La Grange Patch covered the reopening last week.

They opened on Repeal Day — 5 December 2011 — in Williamsburg, founded by Allen Katz and Tom Potter, who co-founded Brooklyn Brewery back in 1987. Fifteen years on they are in Bushwick, and you can now find them on WTD Now.

JAYWALK RYE — Cornell gave them ten seeds of Horton, a 17th-century rye that grew less than thirty miles from here and then vanished for over 150 years. Five years of cultivation later, those ten seeds cover two hundred acres in the Finger Lakes. Empire Rye certified
DOROTHY PARKER — American gin at 44%, juniper with elderberries and hibiscus, named for the Algonquin Round Table writer
PERRY'S TOT — navy strength at 57%, named for the Commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard
MISTER KATZ'S ROCK & RYE — young rye, rock candy, sour cherries, cinnamon

WHERE TO DRINK IT
Jaywalker is their bar, opened in June, in the same building — twenty feet from the still, behind glass. Cocktail programme led by Jamie Gordon. Martinis and Manhattans from $12, and a Rye Egg Cream that contains neither egg nor cream.

Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to midnight. Walk-ins, 21+. Distillery tours by appointment.

Say hello to Sincerely, Bagel — a Korean-owned sourdough bagel shop on NE 24th in Portland, and a new favourite of ours.

Everything there is sourdough. Unbleached, unbromated, no added sugar, no high fructose corn syrup, no additives, no dye.

THE FLAVOURS — kimchi cheddar, ube, za'atar, fig and kelp, all on rotation. Ask what is on when you get there.
THE B.E.C.A. — bacon, egg, cheese and avocado, with a chili crisp schmear and hot honey.
TARTINES — open-faced on their own sourdough, alongside a signature matcha menu.
CATERING — platters and boxes to order, lox and capers and the full spread.

Eater Portland put them in its 2025 piece on the city's hometown bagel revival.
