For those traveling to Mexico:
Some travelers who had recently traveled to Mexico were fined for having an excess number of electronic devices in their luggage. According to the government of Mexico’s website, this old policy is now being enforced. Travelers are entitled to bring a specific list of items in their luggage to Mexico, but they are limited in number. You are allowed:

• Two cameras or camcorders and camera gear; three cellphones or other wireless devices; one GPS; one electronic organizer; one laptop, notebook, Omnibook, or other portable computing device.

You’ll notice something important there: ONE laptop or ONE notebook/tablet. So that means that if you bring a work laptop to keep an eye on work and an iPad to read books on, you violate those rules and are subject to fines.

There have been several surprised travelers. Many of us have brought more than one of these devices into Mexico, so travelers wonder if things have changed. Nothing has changed, but if you are the unlucky person whose luggage is getting searched at customs, that isn’t much consolation.

So be aware that if you are going to Mexico and taking multiple electronic devices, you could have to pay a fine. You can avoid this by limiting the number of electronics to what is allowed or be prepared to pay the fine. According to the website, fines range from 20% to 40% of the exceeding amount.
