SIX RIDES YOU SHOULD NOT USE A FASTPASS FOR

Walt Disney World has a lot of choices when it comes to rides, shows, and attractions. Unless you are going to be in the parks 24/7 then you are going to have to make some choices about what you are going to want to do while you are there. Fastpass+ give you the opportunity to make a “reservation” for three rides, shows, or attractions (Note: Once you use all three Fastpasses you can add a 4th and so on). So, with that being said, choose your Fastpasses wisely.

#6 MUPPETVISION 3DDISNEY HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

Muppetvision 3D is a film with a 3D effect in a theater with 564 people. The reason we tell you not to waste a Fastpass on this attraction is because this attraction only last seventeen minutes and as soon as the show ends, they are already bringing in the next group for the next show. Therefore, you are only waiting approximately twenty minutes. In a park where there are rides with much longer waits, I would save a Fastpass for one of those rides. Plus, this is the same 3D film that debut in 1991 so once you’ve seen it once you should be good for a while.

#5 MICKEY’S PHILARMAGICMAGIC KINGDOM

Much like Muppetvision 3D this is a film with a 4D effect and seating for 486 people (and ten wheelchairs). This is twelve minute film that also brings its next group as you are leaving. If you use the My Disney Experience (it’s a must) app it tells you there is a ten minute wait for this attraction. There are so many other rides to use a Fastpass on.

#4 THE SEAS WITH NEMO AND FRIENDSEPCOT

You ride a “Clamobile” through the “ocean” as the characters from, “Finding Nemo” are projected onto the glass as if they are in the aquarium. This makes our list for two reasons: One, this very family friendly ride only last about six minutes and two, the ride drops you off at the aquarium section of the attraction where Turtle Talk with Crush (which is an eighteen-minute show) is also located. You can avoid any line for the ride and go to the far left of the building, go through the gift shop and you are in the aquarium section. Don’t get caught using two Fastpasses for this if you both the Nemo ride and the Turtle Talk show.

#3 FOR THE FIRST TIME AND FOREVER: A FROZEN SING-ALONG CELEBRATION HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

This is a thirty- minute show at the Hyperion Theater in Disney Hollywood Studios. If you and your young princesses are expecting Anna and Elsa sing all their songs, in person, you will be disappointed. Although Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff make appearances it is the royal historians of Arendelle who tell the story of the movie using video clips for the sing-along (with the lyrics on the screen). If you use a Fastpass here you will get preferred seating but it is not worth using one of those coveted Fastpasses for this.

#2 RIVERS OF LIGHTANIMAL KINGDOM

Rivers of Light is the night-time show at Animal Kingdom. Although a Fastpass will get you preferred seating you still will need to arrive an hour in advance to get your seats. If you do stand by (no Fastpass) you still have to arrive at least an hour earlier to make sure you get a seat. Disney also offers Rivers of Light Dining Packages where you can eat dinner (at Tusker House or Tiffin’s) and also get preferred seating at Rivers of Light. Truth be told I enjoy the other parks nighttime shows more than Rivers of Light. With Pandora, the Kilimanjaro Safari, and Expedition Everest I would much rather use my Fastpasses for these experiences.

#1 JOURNEY INTO IMAGINATION WITH FIGMENTEPCOT

This ride originally opened in Epcot in 1983 and introduced the small purple dragon, Figment, who has garnered quite a cult following over the years. Today it is running its third incarnation of the ride. For the most part this is not very well received by Disney fans…who still hope the first iteration comes back. The wait times for this ride are usually twenty minutes at the most and we have found we can get right on the ride if the kids want to do it. This is another ride that drops you in a, now a little outdated, “technological playground” that can be accessed from the outside without doing the ride. Save your Fastpass! Unless your kids want to do this or you just need to spend a little time in air conditioning there is very little this ride offers.

SIX THINGS COMING TO WALT DISNEY WORLD YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT

#6 SPACE RESTAURANT EPCOT

Opening at the end of 2019 this newest restaurant will be located between Mission Space and Test Track in Epcot. The new table service “experience” will give you the look and feel that you are in space 220 miles above the Earth as you eat. The distance above Earth gives us the tentative name of the restaurant, Space 220. Disney is saying its menu will include an internationally-inspired cuisine with a wide selection of wine and craft beers. It will also include a culturally diverse staff, much like the actual space station above earth. As it stands now, even though it is in the six month booking window you cannot make dining reservations yet.

#5 STAR WARS RESORT

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is opening in a week and a half but construction on a new Star Wars themed resort that should be close to Galaxy’s Edge should be open by the time Walt Disney World celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2021. Right now there is very little official information, but Disney promises an immersive experience that will be a must for any Star Wars fan.

#4 “PLAY PAVILION” EPCOT

Again scheduled to open for the 50th Anniversary, the “Play Pavillion” will open in Epcot in the space vacated by the Wonders of Life pavilion in 2007. For the last twelve years this has only been used for special seasonal events. The “Play Pavilion” will house interactive experiences, your favorite Disney characters, hands-on activities and an entertainment component. From a Disney Imagineer, “it will introduce an immersive and interactive ‘city’ where you can explore, create, and interact with some of your favorite Disney characters.” I, for one, am thrilled to see this little used area of Epcot will finally have life again.

#3 REFLECTIONS LAKESIDE LODGE

The newest Deluxe resort is slated to open in 2022. It will be a “natured-inspired” resort at the former River Country Water Park (which was open 1976-2001). This new resort will be on the shores of Bay Lake between Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness. The resort will also become Disney’s 16th Disney Vacation Club (DVC- Disney timeshare). With more than 900 rooms this resort will “be a celebration of Walt Disney’s lifelong love and respect for nature.”

#2 REMY’S RATATOUILLE ADVENTURE EPCOT

Slated to open in May 2020 (always tentative) in the France pavilion in Epcot, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is the first all-new major attraction to open in the World Showcase since 1988 (Frozen and Three Caballeros were changes to already existing rides). This ride already exists in Disneyland Paris and is very popular. In that ride guests are “shrunk” to the size of a rat and are carried through Paris for a quick retelling of the Pixar movie of the same name. This ride does not replace the underrated film, Impressions de France which already exists in the pavilion.

#1 TRON LIGHTCYCLE POWER RUN MAGIC KINGDOM

Construction of this Disney steel roller coaster has already begun in Tomorrowland in Disney’s Magic Kingdom. It is also set to open for Walt Disney’s 50th Anniversary in 2021. This is another ride that already exists in Shanghai Disneyland. The ride gives you the feel of riding a futuristic motorcycle (lightcycle). You will be whisked through a “world” of bright colors and thrilling twists and turns.

You can watch ride videos on youtube.com for Ratatouille and the Tron rides if you want to see what you can expect.

THE DISNEY SIX

TOP SIX QUICK SERVICE RESTAURANTS IN WALT DISNEY WORLD

In this week's Disney Six entry we look at the top six quick service restaurants in Walt Disney World. It should be mentioned that this is the current list now, but it is always changing.

Before we give you the list two things should be mentioned: 1) If you add the My Disney Experience App highly encouraged if you're travelling to the World) to your phone you can use Mobile Ordering to preorder your food so that you can walk right up to the counter and grab your order. Most quick service restaurants now have Mobile Ordering...but not all do. 2) The busiest times are between 12-2 and 5-7 during the day. You can save some time in line and have a better chance of finding a table if you can go during "off hours."

Now to the list...

#6 Woody's Lunch Box Disney Hollywood Studios Mobile Ordering- yes

One of the newest quick service locations opening in June of 2018. Right off the bat I will tell you the biggest drawback to this location...there is limited seating and no seats have any coverage from the hot Florida sun. This location offers a separate menu for breakfast and a different one for lunch and dinner. Two of its best breakfast offerings are the Breakfast Bowl with "potato barrels smothered in gravy, scrambled eggs and a sprinkling of green onions" and the S'more French Toast Sandwich. Both meals ar both very good and also very hearty. You won't have to eat for the rest of the day, LOL. Lunch and dinner include a BBQ Brisket Melt, a Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich, and "Totchos" which is potato barrels coated with beef and bean chili, corn chips and queso. Really good, really hearty.

#5 Sleepy Hollow Magic Kingdom Mobile Ordering- no

Three words...Chicken Waffle Sandwich. If you blink you could miss this little gem in Liberty Square in the Magic Kingdom. If you are facing the castle and take the walkway to the left on the side of the castle you will see Sleepy Hollow making one of my current favorite dishes. The great thing about these waffles is they are made to order so you know you are always getting a fresh waffle. Plus you have a couple of waffle coices: the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Waffle Sandwich, the Fresh Fruit Waffle Sandwich, or the Breakfast Egg and Cheese Waffle (served until twelve noon) served with ham and tomatoes. If you just want a traditional Mickey Waffle they will top it off with generous helpings of strawberries and whip cream. The only drawback to this quick service location is there is little to no seating.

#4 Flame Tree BBQ Animal Kingdom Mobile Ordering- yes

Located on Discovery Island in Animal Kingdom is the Flame Tree BBQ. This quick service restaurant offers the standard BBQ fare: ribs, chicken, and pulled pork. It makes this list for two reasons: One, the food is very good. The BBQ sauce is more sweet than it is smokey, which is a plus in my opinion. Two, the seating her is plentiful and even though the seating is all outdoors it is covered to protect you from the weather. Also, as is becoming more prevalent in Walt Disney World the Flame Tree also offers alcoholic selections which include beer, wine and a Mandarin Orange Vodka Lemonade.

#3 Casey's Corner Magic Kingdom Mobile Ordering- yes

Located on the far left corner of Main Street U.S.A. in the Magic Kingdom, Casey's Corner is a baseball themed restaurant that is the place to go if you like hot dogs. The only drawback to this quick service location is its lack of seating. There are only a handful of tables inside and the outdoor tables with umbrellas are an especially hot commodity because of the view of the castle and the shows in front of the castle. It is not uncommon to see the tables being used by guests who are not even eating at the restaurant. Patience is required. That aside the hot dogs are fairly standard with a couple of different hot dog options-- Macaroni and Cheese or the Aztec Hot Dog topped with beef, corn salsa and parmesan cheese. Casey's even has a couple of plant-based options for the vegetarian in your party. One other reason I like this quick service location is each month Casey's adds a specialty hot dog to its menu. This month it is the Fried Pickle Hot Dog with green and red peppers topped with chipotle ranch dressing.

#2 Colombia Harbor House Magic Kingdom Mobile Ordering- yes

The main reason this quick service makes my list is not only is there plentiful seating but there is two floors of seating. The upstairs seating is a hidden gem which makes it the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the Magic Kingdom. A lot of the menu is seafood heavy but they do offer enough non-seafood offerings, such as the Chicken Pot Pie and the Harbor Salad to appease those picky eaters.

#1 Satuli Canteen Animal Kingdom Mobile Ordering- yes

This quick service restaurant in the World of Pandora in Animal Kingdom makes the list because the food is good and there are a lot of different options. The Satuli Canteen offers a wide variety of bowls: the Chili-Garlic Shrimp Bowl, the Grilled Beef and Chicken Bowl, and the Chopped Wood-Grilled Chicken Bowl are just of few of the delicious options. This quick service option offers a lot of seating, inside and outside. The kids menu also offers a different spin on the traditional hamburger with the Cheeseburger Steamed Pods (think pot stickers). They also offer the more traditional hot dog and cheese quesadilla. The unique menu, the great theming of the restaurant, and the abundant seating makes this my number one quick service location in Walt Disney World.

Leave a comment to tell me if you like the list or if you have a different list. As always if you are thinking about taking a Disney trip take the stress out of it and call Moore Cruise and Travel today at 518-886-1730 to get a quote or even answer any of your Disney questions.

THE DISNEY SIX

TOP SIX RIDES AT WALT DISNEY WORLD

#6
BIG THUNDER MOUNTAIN RAILROAD-- MAGIC KINGDOM

This is a great roller coaster for kids. You are riding on a runaway train that can jolt you around a little bit, but there are no huge drops and you never go upside down. The reason this ride makes my list is because you get your money’s worth at a ride length of three minutes and twenty-five seconds. This makes this ride the longest of the roller coasters on Disney property.

#5
SOARIN’ AROUND THE WORLD-- EPCOT

Imagine hang gliding around the great landmarks of the world. Disney’s second iteration of Soarin’ (over California was the first) gives you the chance to fly over the Taj Mahal, the savannas of Africa, the Great Wall of China, and many more. The experience raises you straight up and even gives you the feel of swaying back and forth as if you were hang gliding. The best seats on this ride are in the first row, right in the middle. That way you don’t see other people’s feet and some of the images are not distorted (sit on the ends and it looks like the Eiffel Tower is almost at a ninety degree angle). The rise to the top and the swaying can be a little disconcerting, but overall a truly great experience.

#4
HAUNTED MANSION-- MAGIC KINGDOM

This one is on the list because this was one of my favorite rides the first time I went to Disney, so it is very near and dear to my heart. This attraction may sound scary but what it really is Disney at its best. Offering a mix of technology and simple tricks ghosts and spirits come alive in an eerie, but fun way. The Haunted Mansion is vintage Disney. The ride is a little dark in spots but there is enough light that it shouldn’t be too scary for the younger audience.

#3
FLIGHT OF PASSAGE-- ANIMAL KINGDOM

One of Walt Disney World’s newest offerings in the land of Pandora at Animal Kingdom. This thrill ride offers the newest technology and even though it makes you feel like you are flying your “seat” never moves. You are riding a banshee (think flying dragon) through the beautiful world of Pandora. The ride makes you feel like you are moving through the air as you can feel your banshee breathing as you go through the ins and outs of this digitally created world. Kids might be scared of this ride but just remind them their seat never moves, it just feels like it.

#2
EXPEDITION EVEREST-- ANIMAL KINGDOM

This roller coaster is not for the faint of heart, Not only does this coaster include an eighty foot drop at sixty miles per hour, but it also includes a drop backwards at forty miles per hour in total darkness. Plus you have that meeting with the infamous Yeti. This ride has a great queuing area with a lot of different artifacts brought right from Nepal. Plus it has great views of the Disney property...just before they drop you.

#1
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN-- MAGIC KINGDOM

The first ride I ever rode at Walt Disney World continues to be my favorite ride forty years later. There is a small drop at the beginning but still a great ride for kids. This ride puts you in the middle of a battle at sea and the floats you through the pirate life as they pilfer and plunge the villages of the Caribbean. The only drawback for me is the changed scene using the “redhead” in order to be more politically correct.
