Minnesota nice is alive and well in Sauk Centre!

Today, we heard from a lovely woman who was planning a special visit to Sauk Centre. She was looking for a comfortable, accessible place where her 91-year-old mother could meet a new baby in the family and Sauk Centre was the exact middle for the two.

She had already spoken with Wendy at the City of Sauk Centre and couldn’t say enough about how friendly and helpful she was. When we returned her call, we were happy to offer a few ideas based on the accessibility, comfort and quiet setting her family was looking for. Sinclair Lewis Park and Jitters Java Café happened to be two recommendations that seemed especially well suited for this meaningful visit, just a couple of the many welcoming places our community has to offer.

It was such a sweet reminder that the visitor experience begins long before someone arrives. Sometimes it starts with a phone call, a helpful recommendation and someone who takes the time to make a stranger feel welcome. Thank you, Wendy!

Did you know Sinclair Lewis Avenue was once called Third Street?

This vintage postcard captures a busy Third Street in downtown Sauk Centre, likely sometime in the 1940s. Look closely and you’ll spot Hanauer’s Market, Gamble Stores, Hamm’s Beer and Coca-Cola signs, classic automobiles and storefronts lining both sides of the street.

In early 1960, Third Street was renamed Sinclair Lewis Avenue in honor of Sauk Centre’s most famous hometown author. That year marked what would have been Sinclair Lewis’s 75th birthday, the 40th anniversary of the publication of Main Street and the 30th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in Literature.

Lewis was born on Third Street in 1885 and grew up just a short distance away in the home visitors can still tour today.

Now we need help from our local history experts! Do you recognize any of these businesses, remember Hanauer’s Market or know approximately when this photo was taken? Tell us what you notice in the comments!
