Southwest Airlines is making its first-ever mass layoffs in the company’s 53-year history, slashing 1,750 corporate jobs, about 15% of its workforce, as part of an effort to reduce costs.

This follows the airline’s battle with activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management, which pushed for cost-cutting measures and new revenue streams. Southwest has long avoided job cuts, even during economic downturns and the pandemic, but mounting labor costs and inflation pressures have changed that.

CEO Bob Jordan stated the layoffs will focus on corporate and management positions, particularly those with overlapping roles, to improve efficiency.

These changes, including cuts to routes and perks like open seating, are expected to save $210 million this year and $300 million by 2025.

Southwest, under pressure from investors, has also halted plans to charge for baggage, despite calls from activists. The company is struggling to regain sustained profitability after the pandemic.
