Talk about a literal deep dive into the past! ⚓️ Check out this incredible piece of history found on one of our recent river excursions with Captain Matt! This is a fragment of a 19th-century clay to***co pipe bowl, specifically a “stub-stemmed” or reed-stem pipe featuring a distinct cogwheel/fluted design and intricate cross-hatch molding on the shank. Here is why this find is so cool:
- The Design: Unlike long, fragile one-piece European clay pipes, these stub-stemmed styles allowed the smoker to insert a separate, reusable wooden or reed stem. They were tough, practical, and highly popular in the 1800s.
- The Connection: From 19th-century sailors and dockworkers to merchants, someone sat along these same waters centuries ago, taking a break and watching the river roll by.

The riverbed keeps its secrets well, but thanks to the spoils, we get a front-row seat to what was happening beneath the surface generations ago. History isn’t just in books—it’s waiting right out here in the low country mud!

Dad level: Expert. 🏆 He covered this Megalodon tooth in a thick layer of slick clay so it blended perfectly into the riverbanks to fool the kids. Captain Matt’s jaw dropped before he put it in his hands and its weight gave the joke away. 🦈 Muddy feet, legendary prank.

History in the palm of our hand. ☠️ Our crew found this incredible 18th/19th-century bowl of an old clay smoking pipe on one of our latest Low Country Drifters excursions.

Look closely at the relief detail: a skull and crossbones enclosed in an upward triangle. It’s a classic Memento Mori (“remember you must die”) motif, balancing the physical limits of mortality against the upward pursuit of wisdom and the eternal soul. Not a reminder to dwell on morbidity, but an ancient call to burn brightly while alive. 🔥

A magnificent find! 👀 Holding a piece of someone’s daily life from centuries ago really puts the passing of time into perspective.
