Ever wonder why the bridge into Savannah looks the way it does? There's more history in those cables than you'd think.

The Talmadge Bridge you cross today isn't the original. Back in 1953, a cantilever truss bridge carried traffic over the Savannah River, just two lanes and a clearance of about 115 feet. As the Port of Savannah grew and ships got bigger, that low clearance became a real problem (a couple of collisions with the old piers made the danger impossible to ignore).

So in 1987, construction began on the cable-stayed bridge locals know now: a 1,100 foot main span, four lanes, and 185 feet of clearance. It's been the icon of the Savannah skyline ever since.

But the story's not over. The port's still growing, and today's cargo ships are pushing the limits of even this bridge. GDOT is currently replacing and shortening the bridge's cables to raise its clearance, with two bigger ideas on the table for the future: building a taller bridge, or going under the river entirely with a tunnel.

Next time you're crossing into the Hostess City, take a second to appreciate the engineering holding you up. History's still being written on that river.

Legend has it an artillery building once stood on this very lot, with a brothel operating on the second floor. That building is said to have exploded not once, but twice, and both times women on the second floor lost their lives. It wasn't until the second explosion, when men in the building were also killed, that the town finally decided not to rebuild the artillery there.

Today, there are those who believe the women who died in those blasts never left. Staff at B&D have reported an uneasy feeling walking into the basement, a manager once heard their name called out with no one else around, security cameras have caught strange lights hovering near the bar, and paranormal investigators have picked up on the sudden scent of women's perfume drifting through the space.

Historians debate whether this building ever really served as a brothel, so take the legend with a grain of salt. Perhaps the ghosts that haunt this building are of another nature. But one thing isn't up for debate: the burgers at B&D are exceptional.

Dr. T. A. Peterson, better known as Dr. Pete, grew up in a sleepy southern Georgia town where family meals and good company shaped his love for great food. He carried that love into adulthood, right alongside his worn black leather doctor's bag, making house calls around Savannah, Georgia to set a bone, give a shot, or just sit and talk a while.

Medicine was his practice. Cooking was his passion. In between patients, Dr. Pete spent hours in the kitchen crafting sauces and marinades for the people he loved most.

In 1985, his daughter and son in law, Jan and Joel Coffee, decided the world needed a taste of what Dr. Pete's family already knew. They started bottling his recipes under the "Dr. Pete's" label, and just like that, a family tradition became a Savannah staple.

Now you can bring home the same marinades and sauces that have been passed around Dr. Pete's table for generations.
