One of the best parts of Savannah? The squares. 🌳✨ Each one has its own character, history, and charm and makes every stroll through the city feel a little magical.

The Mercer-Williams House, designed in 1860 by architect John S. Norris, was originally built for General Hugh W. Mercer, though no Mercer ever lived in the home that bears the family name. Construction was paused by the Civil War and completed in 1868 after the property changed hands.

Known for its striking Philadelphia Red brick and elegant blend of Renaissance Revival, Greek, and Italianate design, the home features soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, an impressive 60-foot entrance hall, and original 19th-century details still intact today.

Later restored by preservationist Jim Williams in 1969, the home became a showcase of Savannah’s rich architectural and artistic heritage, and the subject of John Berendt's novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

: On this day in 1819, Georgia made history on a global scale with the voyage of the SS Savannah. 🚢⚓

Originally built in New York as a sailing packet, the ship was later purchased by a Savannah shipping firm and converted into a hybrid steamship. At 320 tons, it was equipped with a steam engine, paddlewheel, and sails, making it one of the earliest experimental vessels of its kind. On May 24, 1819, at 5 a.m., the SS Savannah departed on its historic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. There were no passengers or freight on board due to the experimental nature of the journey. After 29 days at sea, including less than 90 hours under steam power, the ship arrived in Liverpool on June 20.

Spotlight: Madison Square 🌿🌸 Tucked right into Savannah’s Historic District, Madison Square is where history, architecture, and quiet Southern beauty all meet in one unforgettable stop.

Designed in 1837 and named for President James Madison, the square is anchored by the monument of Sergeant William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero who fell during the Siege of Savannah in 1779. Just a short walk away, a granite marker quietly traces the southern line of the British defense during that same historic battle, a subtle reminder that you are standing in the middle of centuries of American history.
