NEW FOR 2022 -

A Ghastly Arithmetic

20 years of research has culminated in the completion of the first casualty list of the Army of Mississippi. Over 11,000 names (organized by last name or organized by unit) has been created from over 200 sources. Each name is checked against compiled service records and every name is documented with source data so researchers can consult the original documents. Softcover. $49.99

In Distant Places and in Traceless Dust

From this research, I have produced a narrative that gives an overview of what occurred on the banks of the Tennessee. The efforts to handle the tremendous number of dead is discussed, what happened to the wounded as they made their way southward and POW’s as they left the battlefield of Shiloh for an unknown fate. This research has also uncovered some interesting facts for further study. Softcover. $19.99

Have been doing research on this topic since I was working at the Shiloh NMP bookstore during graduate school.

You can get a copy at Shiloh NMP bookstore or reaching out to me at [email protected]

If you are looking for guided tours, I still have some availability on weekends.

Thanks!

Glad to run across another friend today, Rob Hodge. Some you may have read about him in Tony Horwitz's book Confederates in the Attic when it came out several years ago. Since then, amongst other things, Rob has been working with battlefield preservation and crafting historical films, winning an Emmy for his efforts. Rob has truly created some impressive documentaries on Civil War battles. I consider myself fortunate to be able to work with him while a First Manassas film was shot in 2001. His new website, soon to be up and running, is www.hodgefilms.com.

Ran across an old friend today in Franklin, Thomas Cartwright of the Lotz House in Franklin, TN. Thomas has done a tremendous amount of work with History Channel and numerous other organizations, and gives excellent battlefield tours of Franklin and other western theater sites. Good to catch up with him!

Something to think about the next time you visit Shiloh NMP.

“In great deeds, something abides. On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls… generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream; and lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls.”
― Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

As summer gives way to fall, take some time by yourself or with your family and friends to visit Shiloh! The foliage is about to turn, and it's a great opportunity to walk, hike, bicycle, or learn more about the history of our area!

Take the time this summer to visit Shiloh - whether for a couple of hours or for the day. Make the day memorable, and consider using a battlefield guide to learn more about the fight that occurred in Hardin County so long ago. Call for appointments.
