Cooking the Gullah Way with Sallie Ann Robinson

Cooking the Gullah Way with Sallie Ann Robinson In 2003, Robinson’s first book, "Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way" was published. "Cooking th A third cookbook is scheduled for publication in 2013.

Chef Robinson first attained national prominence as a character named Ethel (based on real-life events), one of the students portrayed in famed author Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water Is Wide. Since its publication in 1972, the novel has inspired stage adaptations as well as two major movie productions. In 2003, the University of North Carolina Press published Robinson’s first book, Gullah Home Cooki

ng the Daufuskie Way. The book successfully combined sea island recipes with personal memoir and drew critical praise from diverse reviewers. Publication of her second cookbook, Cooking the Gullah Way, Morning, Noon, and Night, followed in 2007. Once again, critics and readers alike praised the author for the storytelling quality of memoir in the book, the authenticity of the recipes, and the tasty results achieved when trying them. Chef Robinson conducts cooking demos locally and nationally (in 2011 she was the featured guest chef at The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.), conducts tours/lectures about the history of Daufuskie Island and caters for private functions.

Delicious private catered lunch served yesterday by Sallie Ann Robinson catering company for an international women's group in the St. James Church's Cherry Hill Schoolhouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places! You can read the historic markers and see these two historic buildings at the intersection of Beach City And Dillon Roads, then walk to the end of Beach City Road and visit Fish Haul Park with wonderful displays about Mitchelville, the first town for freedmen. The Gullah/Geechee history is a story that needs to be shared and preserved - Sallie Ann is doing that through her food and her lectures!

Chef Sallie Ann completed her culinary-artist-in-residence program at the HH Island School of the Creative Arts for hundreds of third graders this week-great questions and comments from the children! Children need to spend time with their parents at farmer's markets, supermarkets and "pick your own" farms to learn about produce and seasonality and how to prepare them at home. It's all about keeping the kids IN the kitchen and teaching them how to cook, a skill that will enhance their life in many ways!

What a fabulous time at the Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival-Chef Sallie Ann Robinson autographed cookbooks at the Grand Tasting at the Sea Pines Country Club the night before, and her cooking demo where she prepared one of her signature dishes ("smutted shrimp" and grits) had a tremendous turnout the following day at Honey Horn. WTOC had her on "Mid-Morning Live" a few weeks before with our great friend Jody Chapin to do a cooking demo live on the air-seeing her doing what she loves to do most and best is always too much fun for everybody! What crew doesn't love sampling her food, so lovingly prepared?
