One of the most beautiful places in Savannah, often called The "Sistine of the South" The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist got its start in the late 1700s. Catholic families fleeing unrest in Haiti and France settled here and formed the city's first parish. The church grew alongside the young Diocese of Savannah, established in 1850, and by the 1870s the congregation had outgrown its home.

Construction on the current building began in 1873, and the new cathedral, built in the ornate French Gothic style, was dedicated in 1876. A fire nearly destroyed it in 1898, but the community rebuilt within a couple of years.

Today its twin spires are one of the most recognizable sights on the Savannah skyline, and in 2020 Pope Francis honored the cathedral with the title of Minor Basilica, the first in the diocese's history.

When we first started hosting with our vacation rental in Savannah, we were shocked to learn what some hosts do (and don't do) for their guests.

Here’s what you won’t find at The Abilene on Forsyth:

❌ Extra fees for every little thing: We don't charge extras, even for early check-in or late check-out. If we can accommodate your request, the house is yours! The beach towels are also included. 🤯
❌ Extra guest fees: If you have a late addition to your guest count, no worries. They're welcome to join you!
❌ The ghost host routine: No waiting hours for a response when you need a local recommendation or help getting inside.
❌ Just one roll of toilet paper and empty coffee bars: We fully stock the essentials so you don’t have to run straight to the grocery store the second you arrive. In fact, unless you are grabbing food to eat in, there's no need to ever run to the store. We try to anticipate our guests' needs and include it for your stay.
❌ A 20-item chore list: No stripping the beds, laundering linens, or running the vacuum before 10am. When you stay with us, your check-out day will be pretty dang effortless. After all, you didn't apply to be a member of our cleaning team.

We believe true luxury hospitality means you actually get to relax until the moment you walk out the door.

Every corner of Savannah tells a little story. This is the old Telfair Hospital for Females located just around the corner from The Abilene at 17 E. Park Avenue in Savannah.

It was built in 1884 in the Italianate style of architecture. It was to serve women only & funding was provided by Mary Telfair through her will. Mary was a very prominent resident of Savannah & ended up sharing her wealth with the city through several endowments.

In 1900 it started one of the first nursing schools in the country & in 1960 merged with Candler Hospital. It was one of the longest running women's hospitals in the country.

We were enjoying the porch at The Abilene the other night, in between guests, and this was the sound!

Yes, that was how loud they were, it is not enhanced. Amazing sounds by nature in the middle of a city! A small city yes, but still pretty amazing to sit & experience that.

It always makes us wonder (as Savannah always does), what it must have sounded like when the house was built in 1891. How life was experienced, how they coped, how they made it thru 100° days with 1000% humidity!

Just one of the many things we love about Savannah! 🩷
