FORT PULASKI NATIONAL MONUMENT! Talk about history….this fort endured so much!

“For much of the 19th century, masonry fortifications were the United States’ main defense against overseas enemies. However, during the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority to these forts. The Union army used rifled cannon and compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention.

On the morning of April 10, 1862, Union forces asked for the surrender of the Fort to prevent needless loss of life. Colonel Charles H. Olmstead, commander of the Confederate garrison, rejected the offer.

Fort Pulaski was prepared for a possible infantry attack, but it never endured a direct land assault. Using 36 guns, including the new James Rifled Cannon and Parrott rifles, Union troops began the long bombardment of Fort Pulaski. The rifled projectiles could be accurately fired farther (4–5 miles) than the larger and heavier smoothbore cannonballs. Within 30 hours, the new rifled cannon had breached one of the fort's corner walls. Shells now passed through the fort dangerously close to the main powder magazine. Reluctantly, Colonel Olmstead surrendered the fort. Only two soldiers (one Confederate and one Union) were injured in the attack.”

Enjoying the historic city of Savannah. This is such an amazing city and actually the first planned city in America. Of the original 24 “squares” there are 22 remaining and enjoyed today. These “squares” are small parks throughout the city each with unique characteristics and significance that help create the grid system.

The Chippewa Square is the location of the iconic scene in Forest Gump where he is chatting with various people waiting for the bus….”life is like a box of chocolates…you never know what you’re gonna get.” Unfortunately the actual bench is no longer there but in a museum. See the pics below for a few more we visited.

Being that it was Veteran’s Day, we paid our respects to the men and women who have paid the ultimate price by visiting the Colonial Park Cemetery. Many notable Georgians are laid to rest here as well as others who died during the Revolution.

No trip to Savannah is complete without a visit to the Pirates’ House. “Savannah’s Famous Pirates’ House is located on one of the most historic spots in Georgia. It is here that Trustee’s Garden, the first public agricultural experimental garden in America, was located. Around 1753, when Georgia had become firmly established and the need for the experimental garden no longer existed, the site was developed as a residential section. Since Savannah had become a thriving seaport town, one of the first buildings constructed on the former garden site was naturally an inn for visiting sailors. Situated a scant block from the Savannah River, the inn became a rendezvous for pirates and visiting sailors from the Seven Seas.”

Kurt and I were finally able to ride our Harley, Dakota, after arriving in Georgia. We rode from our awesome campground to St. Dimons Island. We drove to Neptune Park where there are quaint shops to see, boutique restaurants to savor, a pier and lighthouse to explore. Afterward we visited Fort Frederica National Monument also on this island. Check off another place in my Passport Book. On the way back to our campground we spotted a really cool off-the-beaten-path sites-The Smallest Church in America. It is still an active church and worth a look!

So we stayed overnight in Kennesaw, GA at a Cracker Barrel. On the way there we found our favorite BUCEES! Yes, they are in Georgia!

After a rough night with little sleep due to interstate noise, storm and parking lot people hanging out we opted to leave super early and brave the crazy Atlanta traffic on I75. BEST DECISION EVER! We literally had zero issues getting through downtown Atlanta. There are seriously numerous stories, newscasts and articles warning drivers about Atlanta! (Check this out: https://www.11alive.com/article/traffic/how-to-drive-in-atlanta-viral-post-has-us-crying-laughing/85-588887615). The article is hilarious!

Final destination ahead today—SAVANNAH! Stay tuned for much more….

Here we are in Tennessee. It wouldn’t be right to travel through Tennessee/Kentucky without tasting their infamous bourbon 🥃. So to satisfy this almost requirement, we just overnighted at a distillery! Welcome to Old Glory Distillery in Clarksville. TN! Kurt and I (of course) opted for the distillery tour where we learned so much about the process of making delectable spirits. Did you know that this particular distillery is grain to bottle meaning they use locally grown grains to create their bourbon, whiskey, rum, moonshine, and vodka from start to finished bottled masterpieces? It’s very impressive! Tennessee whiskey (as Chris Stapleton’s song says) is very smooth for good reason. It MUST BE (as in requirement) filtered through maple charcoal. Check out this distillery for more information (https://oldglorydistilling.com/).

Onward to Georgia today. The adventures continue…..

Enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise! So we left Arcadian Moon and headed east. Passing through St. Louis, MO, we had to stop and take in the Gateway Arch. There is a tram inside it that takes people to the top, but we didn’t have enough time (add to my long bucket list). We finally crossed the border into Illinois overnighting in the Gunn Creek Campground on Rend Lake. It’s beautiful here too. Pics to come next post

Stay tuned for lots more….

So we have started our Eastern adventure in Amelia. I must say it’s exciting and bittersweet. We enjoyed four full months of family time….now we are again venturing out alone. LOVE MY FAMILIA! We would again love for you to follow our adventures via Love This Journey posts.

We left Colorado Springs yesterday heading east. Last night we stayed (for the second time) at Shiloh Winery in Wakeeney, KS. We love this quaint winery! The owners are fabulous as are their wines. It is located along IH 70…definitely worth a stop!

We left this morning bound for Missouri. Stopping this evening at another Harvest Host called Acadian Moon… fitting name for Halloween 🎃!
