The Emerald Ash Borer is rapidly becoming large problem very close to home. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an exotic beetle native to northeastern Asia. The adult beetles are a metallic green and about half and inch long. The EAB is highly destructive to ash trees. Without native factors (predators, resistant trees, etc.) to suppress EAB populations, the EAB populace in the U.S. has skyrocketed. In Cumberland County, they have been identified in Portland, Gorham, and Westbrook. In York County they have been identified in S**o, Acton, Lebanon, Berwick, South Berwick, Ogunquit, Parsonsfield, and Shapleigh.

It is estimated that after an initial infestation, ash trees in an infested area are at risk of dying within a few years without control methods. Ash accounts for around 4% of Maine’s hardwood forest inventory, and is in grave danger. An estimated 90% of Maine’s ash trees are outside of Maine’s regulated areas.

Please be aware and vigilant, follow the guidelines and rules of the Maine Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine and encourage others to do so. If you see signs of an infestation, please take photos, and submit them to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

Hello Eastern Village Neighbors,

Many of you have written expressing thoughts and concerns about activity associated with North Village. Staff is working to be responsive and understanding. The intent of this email is to provide a quick update of information we recently have been made aware of related to the construction activity.

The site contractor, Shaw Brothers has mobilized. As with most construction activity, their first order of business will be to grub the site (meaning strip the base layer of soil, brush, stumps). This material will be stockpiled in the undeveloped portion of Eastern Village, and therefore over the next week (perhaps 3-5 days) there will be trucks exiting the North Village site and traversing the existing gravel, construction drive onto Classical tLn, (next to Lot 140) and then down reflection Dr., to deposit the materials in the undeveloped area of Eastern Village (Phase 6 and/or 7). The stockpiled materials are often reused at a later stage of construction and our 3rd party inspectors will keep an eye on the materials to be sure there is no erosion, runoff or other unintended movement of material. As noted, this activity will last a few days.

We have communicated with the site contractor that they are to direct their construction vehicles through the Ward St. connection to RT 1, except for when operational necessary - such as the movement of materials within the development as noted above. They have heard and understand the directive.

Also, with regards to the 'barriers' at the end of the paved hammerhead connection to future 'Camden St.' These are temporary measures that will be replaced with a locked gate to allow emergency vehicles to enter the site (Public Safety Dept. will have a key) . The gate has been ordered and the Developer has been told this will need to be in place prior to the issuance of a building permit.

As we become aware of similar items we will do our best to share the information. We appreciate your understanding that staff has many active construction sites throughout town to track and we do our best with the resources at hand; however this means we may not always have the ability to send these types of updates with each stage of activity.

Please share with others within the community that may be interested.

Best,

Jay Chace

CHRISTMAS TREE PICK UP

As a reminder, beginning Monday, January 4th and throughout the entire month of January, Public Works will pick up your Christmas tree curbside, on the same day as your trash collection. Public Works picks up trees separate from trash collection, so if you see your trash picked up, but not your tree (or vice versa) - DO NOT DESPAIR - we will be there!

We ask that you put your tree out the day of pickup, in an effort to avoid it freezing to the ground. Obviously, if it is snowing on the day you planned to put your tree out for pick up, please wait until the following week. If snowing (or otherwise icy or dangerous road conditions), our crew will be plowing/treating the roads rather than picking up trees. (Priorities!)
