After two weeks and almost two thousand miles, The Traveling Rafikis are heading home.

The friendships that were made with one another will be life-long. Our guides and drivers, Mathew, Tony and Jack, guided us through some of the most amazing wildlife parks in all of Kenya. Their experience, knowledge and compassion for all us helped make it an unforgettable experience.

For me, “my guys” are my family. Every time I visit, a piece of my heart stays in Kenya. We have been friends for eight years now, and I’m so grateful for your friendship. I’ll be seeing you soon my rafikis!

We arrived at our new camp in the
Ol Pejeta Conservancy on Saturday afternoon. Ol Pejeta is a 90,000 acre preserve and is known for their great work as wildlife guardians focusing on protecting and preserving the rhino population.

Rhino poaching is a serious conservation crisis driven primarily by the demand for rhino horn, particularly in parts of Asia where it is falsely believed to have medicinal properties or is used as a status symbol. Poachers often kill rhinos brutally to harvest their horns, pushing several rhino species to the brink of extinction. Despite global bans on the trade of rhino horn and increased efforts in anti-poaching patrols and habitat protection, illegal hunting continues due to the high black market value.

The Traveling Rafikis went to visit the gravesites of several rhinos that were killed for their horns in the Ol Pejeta area. We were a somber group, no words to truly express how you feel when seeing the rhino graves.

There are only two Northern White rhinos left in the world; Najin and Fatu who are mother and daughter, and they live here at Ol Pejeta. They are protected 24/7 by armed guards. Their keeper, Jeremy has been caring for them for almost 20 years. The conservancy is working to repopulate the species with the s***m that was harvested when Sudan, the last living male, died in 2018.

In 1970 there were over 20K rhinos in Kenya, in 1980 it dropped to 1800. Then in 1970 only 400 remained. Populations are increasing, today there are approximately 1900 rhinos in Kenya. Help spread the word about rhinos and poaching.

The Traveling Rafikis visited a Maasai village while we were in Amboseli. As we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and the rhythmic beat of traditional songs and dances. Walking through the village, we were struck by the beauty of the manyattas—small, hand-built huts made of mud and sticks. Phillip the chief, explained the customs and way of life, from the importance of cattle to the meaning behind their colorful clothing and jewelry. We also learned about native herbs the tribe uses for medicine.

We met the local school children and brought gifts and school supplies for them. We watched as they started a fire by rubbing sticks together with grass, we even got to join in a traditional jumping dance, which was both exhilarating and humbling. It was a powerful glimpse into a culture so different from our own, yet so welcoming and proud.
