Rosapenna: Three Legendary Courses

Perched on the edge of Sheephaven Bay in northwest Ireland, Rosapenna Golf Resort is home to a trio of world-class links — each with its own legacy.

The Old Tom Morris Links, laid out in 1893 by the legendary Old Tom himself, captures the essence of traditional links golf. Beside it, the Sandy Hills Links, crafted by Pat Ruddy of European Club fame, brings bold, modern character to the dunes.

And now, the spotlight shines on St Patrick’s Links — a Tom Doak design that has taken the golf world by storm. Since its debut in 2021, it has soared into the global spotlight, climbing to #49 in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the World (2023-24) — a rare feat for such a young course.

SGH Golf is proud to bring golfers to Rosapenna, where the game's history and future are written across every fairway.

Old Head: Where Golf Meets the Edge of the World

Jutting more than two miles into the Atlantic Ocean, the Old Head Golf Links of Kinsale is home to one of the most visually striking and exhilarating golf courses on the planet. Built on a dramatic headland in County Cork, this world-class links began construction in 1993 and opened for play in 1997 — and it’s been turning heads ever since.

Carved into cliffs that tower above the ocean, every hole at Old Head delivers a distinct test of skill, shaped by rugged terrain, sea breezes, and breathtaking views. It’s not just the views that make it memorable — it’s how the course moves through its landscape, using nature as both backdrop and obstacle. Playing here means embracing every element Ireland’s coast can throw your way.

The course was the vision of the late John O’Connor and his brother Patrick — and it’s become a must-play for serious golfers drawn to unforgettable settings and championship-level challenges.

Great golf deserves great planning. That’s where SGH Golf comes in. SGH Golf takes care of the details — you focus on the fairways. Where will your next game take you?

Ballybunion Golf Club: A Legacy Forged in Sand, Wind, and Sea

Some golf clubs are born of vision. Ballybunion Golf Club was born of sandhills, storms, and the unwavering determination to endure.

Founded in 1893 and once described dismissively as “a rabbit warren below the village” by the Irish Times back in 1897, Ballybunion Golf Club has proven itself to be not only a first-class links course—but a survivor. A course carved into Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coastline, Ballybunion has faced down more than a century of environmental challenge, local skepticism, and the constant tug of the tides.

Its earliest layout is credited to James McKenna, grandfather of the club's future Secretary-Manager. McKenna, also responsible for Lahinch and Dollymount, laid out the original holes in 1892. The club formally came into being the following year, and by 1897 was under the stewardship of P. McCarthy of the iconic Lartigue Railway.

In the 1970s, winter storms battered the coast. Erosion became an existential threat. Ballybunion responded—not with resignation, but with rock. A protective sea armour program was launched to defend its legendary seaside holes.

The results? Remarkable.

Two aerial images, one from 1951 and one by Jacob Sjöman in recent years, tell the story. Where the old second hole (now the seventh) once sat vulnerably, the current green now perches securely—but daringly—on a cliff's edge. Though the land has receded 10–20 meters over the decades, Ballybunion has held the line.

The upside? That same erosion has turned the seventh into one of Ireland’s most thrilling seaside tests—out-of-bounds flanks the right, the cliff-edge green dares every approach, and nature now frames the course’s fierce personality.

Ballybunion is no ordinary golf destination. It’s a living dialogue between sport and environment, history and modernity, land and sea. For those drawn to challenge, beauty, and resilience—this is your next pilgrimage.

Let SGH Golf take you there.

Royal Dornoch: Never to Host The Open

Royal Dornoch Golf Club, founded in 1877, stands as one of the oldest and most revered golf courses in the world. Situated in the scenic Highlands of Scotland, this historic course has long been celebrated for its stunning views, challenging layout, and rich golfing heritage. Over the years, it has hosted some of the most prestigious tournaments in amateur golf, such as the Scottish Amateur Championship, the British Ladies Amateur, and the Walker Cup. The course’s iconic, rugged dunes and perfectly crafted table-top greens even inspired legendary golf course architect Donald Ross, who carried the Royal Dornoch influence to design famous American courses, including Pinehurst No. 2 — the site of multiple U.S. Open Championships.

However, despite its incredible legacy, Royal Dornoch has never hosted The Open Championship — and, most likely, never will. The course's location, far in the Scottish Highlands, makes it a challenge to host large-scale tournaments. Additionally, its shorter length compared to modern Open venues limits its ability to meet the strict specifications for an Open Championship. But while these factors prevent it from being a regular stop on The Open rotation, Royal Dornoch remains one of the most magical and sought-after links courses in the world.

So, if it’s not a major tournament venue, what makes Royal Dornoch so special? It’s the raw beauty and the spirit of the game that make it unforgettable. The stunning landscape, complete with views of the Dornoch Firth, and the challenging design draw golfers from all over the world. Whether you’re navigating the rugged dunes or conquering its wild greens, playing here is a truly unique experience that leaves a mark on any golfer.

While The Open might not be in Royal Dornoch's future, its magic lies in its pristine, unspoiled environment and timeless appeal. A round here feels like a journey through golfing history, and it is a must-play destination for any golfer visiting Scotland.

At SGH Golf, we specialize in crafting unforgettable golf trips to iconic courses like Royal Dornoch. Ready to experience the beauty and challenge of this legendary course for yourself? Contact us today to start planning your dream golf getaway!

Discover Royal Portrush Golf Club – A Coastal Gem of the Emerald Isle and Home of the 2025 Open Championship

Perched along the breathtaking northern coast of Northern Ireland, Royal Portrush Golf Club is a world-renowned links course, steeped in history and set to once again host The Open Championship in 2025. Established in 1888, it remains the only course outside mainland Great Britain to have hosted The Open, most recently in 2019.

The Dunluce Links, crafted by the legendary Harry C**t, is celebrated for its challenging layout and stunning views of the Atlantic. Signature holes like the notorious Calamity Corner, one of the most testing par 3s, have earned the course its place among golf’s elite. With The Open returning in 2025, the world’s top players will once again face this iconic course.

Royal Portrush also benefits from its unique location, lying in close proximity to the ancient ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the sea. The castle’s storied past adds to the magical ambiance of the area, offering golfers not only a top-class sporting experience but also a window into Ireland’s rich history.

After a day on the course, golfers can explore the nearby village of Bushmills, home to the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, established in 1608. To complete the experience, Royal Portrush has introduced new luxurious lodging options, allowing golfers to stay in comfort just steps away from the course. With The Open on the horizon, there has never been a better time to visit this legendary club.

Whether you're exploring the history of Dunluce Castle, enjoying a tasting at Bushmills, or playing one of the most iconic links courses in the world, Royal Portrush offers an unforgettable golf experience.

Embrace the history, scenery, and world-class golf of Royal Portrush with SGH Golf.

Where Past and Present Converge: Discover Kingsbarns Golf Links

Nestled along Scotland's dramatic East Coast, just a few miles from the legendary Old Course in St. Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links is a stunning modern course with deep roots in the past. Though the current layout opened its fairways in 2000, the land itself has a history stretching back to 1793, when the game was first played there. This site has been at the heart of Scottish golf for nearly two centuries.

In 1815, the original Kingsbarns Golfing Society was officially founded. The club’s initial 9-hole course was established on the land where the current course sits today, but the original course had to be abandoned in 1850. However, the golfing spirit remained in the area, as locals continued to play on the land until a revival came in the late 1990s.

The course as we know it today was designed by Kyle Phillips, who created a perfect blend of traditional links style and modern design, offering stunning views of the North Sea. Opened in 2000, Kingsbarns quickly earned recognition as the first Scottish course built on links land in over 70 years, as one of the world’s premier golfing destinations, and has since been home to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Since its inception, Kingsbarns has also become famous for its dramatic, seaside layout and its unrivaled vistas. The course is often ranked among the top courses in the world and offers golfers a truly unique challenge on every hole.

While Kingsbarns might be a relatively new addition to Scotland’s golfing landscape, it has already become a stage for countless memorable golfing moments. Over the years, Rory McIlroy, Tom Watson, Padraig Harrington, and many others have played here, each leaving their mark on the course’s growing legacy. In 2024, it was once again the stage for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, bringing together some of the game’s most celebrated names. The course's ability to test and challenge the world’s best players speaks volumes about its design and its place in the history of Scottish golf.

Golfers can also enjoy the renowned Kingsbarns clubhouse, a perfect spot to relax after a round while soaking in the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

At SGH Golf, we specialize in crafting customized golf travel experiences that allow you to play at some of the world’s most revered courses. Step into the heart of Irish golf at The K Club, Ireland’s premier golf resort.

This iconic resort offers not just one, but two world-class parkland courses, both designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer. With recent upgrades and a strong vision for the future, The K Club stands proudly as Europe’s only 36-hole Arnold Palmer-designed destination—and it’s easy to see why it continues to host some of golf’s biggest moments.

Palmer North
Home to the 2006 Ryder Cup, the 2016 Irish Open (where Rory McIlroy hit the European Tour Shot of the Year), and host to 11 European Opens, Palmer North is one of Europe’s most spectacular courses. Ranked regularly among the top three parkland courses in Ireland, it delivers both charm and challenge, rewarding strategic play and shot-making brilliance.

And it’s not done yet—Palmer North will host the Irish Open again in 2025 and 2027, solidifying its legacy as a must-play course for any serious golfer. Even if you’re not teeing off from the championship markers, you’ll still be going head-to-head with a course shaped by Palmer himself—and that’s a thrill in its own right.

Palmer South
While Palmer North gets much of the spotlight, Palmer South is a gem in its own right. Designed with an inland links style, it weaves through dramatic rock features and rolling dune-style terrain. Elevated viewing points and cleverly contoured fairways make it both a challenge for players and a joy for spectators.

Palmer South has seen its share of magic too—from Retief Goosen’s 2004 Smurfit European Open victory, just two weeks after his U.S. Open win, to Colin Montgomerie’s nail-biting 2007 European Open triumph. This course is built for drama—and delivers every time.

More Than Just a Round of Golf
Beyond the fairways, the K Club experience extends into K Golf World, where players can refine their skills using the latest simulation technologies—or simply enjoy a fun evening socializing with friends and family over drinks and delicious bar bites.

Whether you're a group of seasoned players chasing bucket-list courses or a mixed group of golfers and non-golfers looking for luxury, beauty, and world-class service, SGH Golf is here to tailor the perfect trip for you. From tee times to accommodations, we make every detail seamless.

05/01/2025

Nestled on a slender peninsula of windswept dunes along Ireland’s East Coast, Portmarnock Golf Club has stood as a pillar of championship golf for over 125 years. With panoramic views of the Irish Sea and a layout shaped by nature, this historic venue offers a pure and timeless test of links golf — one that has drawn the game’s greatest players across generations.

From early legends such as Harry Vardon, Henry Cotton, and Bobby Locke to modern champions like Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Padraig Harrington, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy, Portmarnock’s fairways have seen it all.

As McIlroy himself has said:
“I always love playing Portmarnock Golf Club; one of the world’s greatest links courses in my view.”

The course’s history is as rich as the game itself. It has hosted the Irish Open 19 times, beginning with the inaugural event in 1927. Notable winners have included Fred Daly, Dai Rees, Ben Crenshaw, Hubert Green, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Michael Campbell. From 1976 to 1990, Portmarnock was a regular stage for the Irish Open, welcoming a field filled with major champions and future greats.

In 1960, Portmarnock hosted the Canada Cup, where Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead secured a victory for the United States. It was later the venue for the 1991 Walker Cup, where a rising generation of American stars — including Phil Mickelson and David Duval — played their part in a defining team triumph.

Most recently, the 2019 Amateur Championship returned to Portmarnock, marking only the second time the event had been held outside Great Britain. It was a fitting tribute in the year the club celebrated its 125th anniversary, reinforcing its legacy as a cornerstone of Irish golf.

After the final putt drops, visitors are welcomed into the elegant clubhouse, originally built in 1896 and now fully modernized. With its classic charm, exceptional service, and sweeping views over the links, it provides the perfect setting to reflect on a memorable round.

At SGH Golf, we create golf travel experiences that bring you to the heart of Ireland’s greatest courses. Our itineraries are fully tailored — from tee times at exclusive venues like Portmarnock, to hand-selected accommodations, ensuring an unforgettable journey on and off the course. If Portmarnock is on your bucket list, we invite you to make it a reality.

And with Portmarnock just 25 minutes from Dublin’s city center, you’ll have the best of both worlds: world-class golf by day, and vibrant Irish culture by night. From fine dining to historic pubs, Dublin’s energy and charm are never far away.
