Costs vs. Value of Stormwater BMPs: Which is More Important to You?

Some best management practices (BMPs) appear to be more attractive than others mostly because they provide very inexpensive initial costs. But a closer look at the longer-term maintenance related costs shows they are not always the best option.

In the chart below, a simple geotextile fabric insert filter is compared to the all Stainless-Steel Ultra-Urban Filter (UUF) Chester. Five catch basin inserts were installed on a small catchment having typical contaminant loading. The fabric filter required replacement quarterly compared to the UUF Chesters that can last up to 20 years. Including quarterly cleaning and servicing for the Chester models, a 20-year cost comparison demonstrates savings as much as 80% based on a Net Present Value (NPV) analysis.

What makes TSS pollution such a serious issue?

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) are the parameters most frequently associated with water quality impairments by solids. The U.S. EPA states: "Solids are one of the most common contaminants found in urban storm water." Elevated levels of TSS increase turbidity, reduce the pe*******on of light at depth within the water column, and limit the growth of desirable aquatic plants.

TSS that settles out as bottom deposits contributes to sedimentation and can alter and eventually destroy habitats for fish and bottom-dwelling organisms. TSS also provides a medium for the accumulation, transport and storage of other pollutants including nutrients and metals.

What Makes Bacteria Pollution in Stormwater a Serious Issue?

“Pathogens” in stormwater runoff are the single most frequent cause of water quality impairment in the U.S., with 12,880 waterbodies listed as impaired on state lists (EPA 2016).

Today, the most common reason for beach closures is the presence of high bacteria levels that are generated from contaminant sources such as: Animal Waste, Outdoor Homeless Shelters, Trash & Dumpster Leaks, and Ageing Infrastructure (Leaky Sewer Lines, etc.).
