Traveling during Covid is unique. We all want to feel protected and safe, but at the same time experience a real travel getaway. This was a perfect place! In the 1800’s this was a booming mining town which was eventually deserted. Today these 12 authentically hand-built restored log cabins are each unique with their own character and magnificent views of the mountains and meadows. Our cabin was the original one on property with a sitting room and wood burning stove fireplace. The view from our patio was a waterfall!
Dunton has actual hot springs on property which was perfect after long hikes or horseback rides. They offer five ways to take to the waters, which range in temperature from 85°F to 106°F: inside the restored 19th century Bathhouse, under the stars at the source, in the pool outside the Bathhouse, in the pool behind the Dunton Store cabin and inside Well House cabin.
We arrived at the height of the Aspen Trees in full color display, nature at its best!
The summer activities are as follows:
• Horseback Riding in the high Rockies
• Fly Fishing on the Dolores – private waters
• Hiking in the high San Juans
• Mountaineering in the higher San Juans
• Mountain Biking
• Rock Climbing
• Trail Rides into the San Juans
• Rafting on the Animas Rivers and Dolores Rivers
• Photography & Fine Art instruction
• Archeological Day Tours to the Desert
• Spa and library on property (separate cabins)
If you enjoy gourmet food, this is the place (and all meals/alcohol included). We ate outside on the large wraparound deck. Since so few people can stay here, we felt safe and very socially distanced. I am actually ready to go back again!
