A New Leaf may want to reconsider the timing and structure of how rental assistance is offered. If the stated goal is to prevent homelessness, limiting applicants to a one-hour call window on the first Thursday of each month does not appear to be an effective or accessible approach.

My friend has attempted to apply for this assistance every month, and despite calling at the exact time indicated in the automated message, she is consistently informed that all funds have already been allocated and told to try again the following month. This has been occurring for the past six months.

Additionally, over the last six months, only two of those “first Thursdays” have fallen within three days of when rent is actually due. This means rental assistance is being offered only after tenants—such as a single mother of two—are already at risk of late payments and just days away from receiving a five-day eviction notice.

This raises a serious question: does this system truly help prevent homelessness, or does it provide assistance only after families have already reached a crisis point?
