I ❣️Canada. And what better way to show my affection than to have visited three equally beckoning but all distinctively different destinations in the past month. Beginning with Ottawa, Canada's capital city was new to me and my recommendation is don't let it be unknown to you. Here, you're surrounded by pride of the country and a visual lesson in its history. Our Panamanian days of adventure were ventures into the rainforest - to travel a tributary of the Panama Canal's Gatun Lake on an expedition boat where we passed the days first ships entering from the Caribbean and saw monkeys, a crocodile, even a capybara. And the following day started with a sloth sighting, followed by a visit to the community of one of the country's seven indigenous tribes, the Embera. Only in Panama . . .

When I think of Panama, I think in colors and cuisine. Like surround sound, bright hues are everywhere. And F&B opportunities range from coffee tasting (the world's most expensive served in w**e glasses, of course) and chocolate making to memorial meals . . . from the local's fresh fish market to Caleta (led by a Michelin-starred chef) and La Compania's own Villa Ana located in a 1928 historic mansion and so exclusive a frequent diner is the country's president.

May I introduce you (along with myself) to the multi-faceted country of Panama? Easily reached via Copa Airlines non-stop from San Diego to Panama City, 6 hours later you're in a romantic, historical, cultural and hospitable destination. Though only the size of South Carolina, it is packed with pleasure. And what better place to call your Panama City home than Hotel La Compañía, Casco Antiguo (in itself, a lesson in history as you round every corner) and greeted by the smile of Octavio at its welcoming reception desk. Ahh . . .

What a privilege it was to join the Fallbrook community (especially my friend, Debra Peters) in landscaping a home for a deserving veteran, Seth. Thank you Homes For Our Troops for making this happen for Seth and so many others. And a big thank you to all Vets for serving our country. ❤️🇺🇸❤️

As expected in Amish country's Shipshewana, one standout is the food - fresh from the farm. Among the treats: its legendary peanut butter (key: it's mixed with marshmallow fluff), pies (enjoyed during an in-home Amish dinner with Lamar and Linda King), homemade jellies, homestyle noodles from E&S Foods and milk straight from the cow at Amish-owned Stutzman Dairy Farm and served by owner Harry Stutzman. Dinner at the Black Sheep, owned and operated by local Shawna Rae where every dish is made to order in her from-scratch kitchen (personal hit: smoked chicken legs) was a standout. The lights-out finale was a concert featuring Nashville talent, Tyler Hubbard, performing at the Blue Gate Performing Arts Center.

You might wonder what there is to do in Shipshewana beyond the horse and buggy rides. There's daisy farm visits and creating a mosaic souvenir, basket making, meeting Loren and learning all about his leather shop, pretzel making (and eating), visiting the lively auction (with inside tips from auctioneer, LaWayne Miller) and more. My fav: getting to know the Amish, many of whom were very comfortable sharing details of their back-in-the-day way of life. Shoutout to our buggy driver, Glen.

Have you ever longed to just slow down and experience a simpler way of life? If so, meet Shipshewana - a small Amish community in the northernmost part of Indiana. Here, it's not unusual to see horse-and-buggy travel, men with beards and wearing a hat (the Sunday hat is black felt) and women and girls wearing bonnet head coverings (always plain and functional rather than decorative). And my favorite part: there's a sense of peace - best found in the Midwest.
