Choose a River Cruise or Sunset Cruise if you want the classic moving batteau experience: a guided history tour on the James River, with stories of the batteaux, the boatmen, and the river trade.

Choose a Riverside Dinner if you want supper served aboard the batteaux, live music, firelight, and a slower evening at our private riverfront property.

We’re honored to share that James River Batteau Company has been recognized as a Chesapeake Gateways Network Experience through the National Park Service.

The Chesapeake Gateways Network highlights places and experiences that help connect people to the history, culture, and landscapes of the Chesapeake region. For us, that means sharing the story of Virginia’s batteaux, the James River, and the communities that grew alongside it.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help preserve and interpret this history, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors to experience it firsthand from the water.

Farm to Batteau returns in 2026 with a new format, centered on dinner aboard the batteaux and a chef-led, open-fire meal by Sarah Rennie of . It is an evening shaped by the James River itself — food cooked over flame, time on the boats, and a slower way to gather at the water’s edge.
