Blue whales are going eerily silent—and scientists say it’s a warning sign
A six-year study off California’s coast shows how marine heat waves and noise pollution are silencing the ocean’s largest singers. Does saving the ocean start with hearing it?
Beneath the ocean's surface, a symphony ripples and rolls, ricochets and hums—and whales pour their songs into the deep soundscape like streams of molten silver.

Researchers are alarmed after noticing a significant drop in the number of vocalizations from blue whales.

Our motto, "Experience nature at your doorstep" is once again realized!

After alerting our guests to an active whale migration filled with plenty of breaching heading south they reported:

"Watched whales breach and spout well over 100 times yesterday afternoon until dusk. They were off the bluff by the house. We've never seen activity even close to that.😊😊"

When you come to Sea Ranch Abalone Bay to whale watch here are a few tips for you:
-Look close to shore, and look out across the horizon.
-Watch for anything that breaks the surface of the water.
-Look especially for blowholes: When a whale exhales, you can see a spray of water out of the top of the ocean that can look like smoke from the shore
-Watch for the curve of their backs and the lifting of tails
-Look for boats, especially if they are stopped.
- Watch for birds that may have been startled or seeking along with them the small fish or crustacians that whales are feeding on
-Watch other people who are watching them then join them too!

Whale ho!
Whales are drawn to Sonoma County’s coastline because the area’s unique oceanography creates an upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich waters from the deep. Upwelling fuels plankton blooms, which feed anchovies and krill — a feast for humpbacks.

(KRON) — Humpback whales are back. More than 150 of the gentle ocean giants were counted recently by volunteer naturalists at Bodega Head, according to Sonoma Land Trust. “It’s that tim…

As posted in the Best Sonoma County Beaches
Best for couples: Sea Ranch:
"There are six public access trails in Sea Ranch leading to coastal beaches, such as Shell Beach and Stengel Beach (temporarily closed to replace a wooden stairway), with its seasonal waterfalls. But perhaps the best beach for couples here is Black Point, a long sandy cove accessed via a steep wooden staircase. The beach is typically secluded and enjoys beautiful ocean views. Access Black Point Beach via Sea Walk Drive, located off Coast Highway 1, The Sea Ranch, parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov"

🐑 We Sponsored a Sheep — and You Can Too! 🐑

If you’ve strolled the trails at The Sea Ranch or visited a Sonoma County Regional Park, you may have spotted some very special “groundskeepers” hard at work.

These woolly workers aren’t just adorable — they’re helping reduce wildfire risk, restore native habitats, and keep our landscapes healthy through targeted grazing.

At Sea Ranch Abalone Bay, we’re proud to have donated a full year’s cost of grazing for one sheep through the Sonoma County Parks Foundation’s Sponsor a Sheep program.

We invite our guests, followers, and neighbors to join us in supporting this important work! Your $100 sponsorship helps fund grazing projects that protect our parks, wildlife, and communities.

📸 Keep an eye out for our local Sea Ranch sheep too — they work year-round right here in our community, sometimes even sneaking a taste from flower beds or fruit trees if they wander beyond their fences. 😉

For $100, you can sponsor a sheep for a month of grazing in Sonoma County Regional Parks, which not only reduces fire risk, but also keeps grasslands and ecosystems healthy. The average cost of...
