🌀 Hurricane season is upon us, and while some of our nests will be impacted, we want to remind everyone out there of a few things:

🐢 Sea turtles have a nesting strategy that accommodates for such natural events. Each nesting female turtle deposits several nests throughout the duration of the nesting season - essentially hedging her bets to make sure that even if a storm hits at some point during the nesting season, there is a high probability that at least a few of the nests will incubate successfully.
🐢 No storm season is a total loss for Florida's sea turtles. Even in years when Florida sustained direct hits from multiple storms, hatching and emergence success rates were still well within the normal range.

If you see a nest washing out or find eggs on the beach:
🚫 Do not touch eggs and leave them where you found them! The best chance for the eggs is not to move them around. Our trained and permitted Volunteers conduct surveys each morning at sunrise and will document washed out nests, cover exposed eggs, and rebury loose eggs on the beach. You can report washing out nests and exposed eggs by emailing us at [email protected].

💚 We sincerely appreciate everyone's concern for the safety of our turtles. We can give all of our surviving nests the best chance possible by keeping it clean, flat, and dark out there.

After nearly 20 water rescue calls in the span of a few hours Tuesday afternoon, South Walton Fire District made the decision to change flags to DOUBLE RED! 🚩🚩

That means the water is NOW CLOSED.

DO NOT GET IN THE WATER!

Lifeguards did respond to an incident where Advanced Life Support (ALS) units transported one person to a local hospital.

SWFD successfully performed 11 Water Rescues and Public Assists Friday and Saturday!

There should have been ZERO!

Already one this morning!

LIFE THREATENING SURF & RIP CURRENTS!!!

WATER IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC!!!

BEACHES ARE OPEN, BUT WATER IS CLOSED!!!

STAY COMPLETELY OUT OF THE WATER!!!
