Q: What’s with the black beach balls hanging from trees along 30A?
A: These are actually yellow fly taps.

The name “yellow fly” is used to describe about a dozen different species of yellow-bodied biting flies. These are found all across Florida and are most abundant during the months of May and June.

The yellow fly is an aggressive biter. As a member of the Tabanidae family and known by their full name, Diachlorus Ferrugatus, the female is the inflictor of bites. The males are primarily pollen and nectar feeders.

“COASTAL DUNE LAKES are a rare natural phenomena that only occur in a handful of locations around the globe, including New Zealand, Australia, Madagascar and South Walton, Florida.

In fact, South Walton has 15 named coastal dune lakes that fall along the Scenic Highway 30-A corridor. Lake Powell, the largest of the 15 lakes, falls in neighboring Bay County and is the only coastal dune lake not fully situated in Walton County.

South Walton’s coastal dune lakes are said to be as much as 10,000 years old and were formed by winds that redistributed sand and created the shallow basins (with most lakes averaging only about 5 feet deep).
But what makes these lakes truly unique is that their mostly fresh water content sits within just a few feet of the Gulf’s salt water, separated only by a natural berm of sand. Following a heavy rain or other inflow, the sand berms are suddenly breached, causing a flood of fresh water to pour openly into the Gulf. This event is known as an “outfall,” and it’s a time when salty seawater can also flood back into the dune lake, until the levels stabilize. The result is a rare brackish ecosystem that’s home to both fresh and salt water species.” copied from 30A.com

This is a must read if you’re staying at Fantasea Beach House! We love the bike path. Please familiarize yourself with trail etiquette and enjoy! (P.S.- you can reserve bikes from our preferred vendor Salt Air 30a. They will deliver & pick up.)

The 18-mile Timpoochee Trail is a beautiful paved trail along South Walton’s Scenic Highway 30A. Come walk, jog, or bike along this route.

We are so lucky to have a private, deeded beach access so close to the beautiful gulf coast. However, for guests looking for public beach access that has parking, restrooms and is handicap accessible, we recommend using the Inlet Beach Regional Access.

Inlet Beach Regional Access has parking, restrooms, and lifeguards during peak season. Located at the end of South Orange Street about 200 yards south of US Hwy 98. Inlet Beach Regional Access is the largest county access and features three dune walkovers and 117 parking spaces. A half-mile walk to....
