One of the best parts of Houston was this community. Jaxx loves to make friends wherever he goes— and socializing your pups is so important for their mental well being. Even Finn (who is a grumpy old dog) loved to get in and play every once in awhile. These two being the only little in this wonderful gathering of dogs (not a dog park, just neighbors letting their dogs play at a local grass area) Jaxx and Finn were super loved by both the humans and dogs.

Where do you take your pup for socializing? How do they do?

Going from nature to the city can be a fun transition! It’s so busy we have to remember our manners:) One reason we need to hit the city every couple of months is to replenish our food!! We love our frozen primal dog food. It’s really the only one as picky terriers we will eat consistently as long as the protein is switched up. But man it can be tough to find sometimes. It is also balanced with a ton of veggies!!🥦

What do you do to feel creative?

Yesterday I was toast. The sun and sand have finally caught up to me. We are awaiting a replacement sensor for the van to arrive here— and it honestly is the ONLY REASON we are still at the beach. I could have spent the whole day reading in the van. 🚐

BUT— then we would not have this cute memory. It didn’t take much for us to step outside for an hour and move our bodies and our minds a little differently. And that’s all it takes to create a smile in the end.

Now GET ME TO A CITY!

Were used to hiking 5+ miles most days, which can make for wandering minds and impatient behavior when lounging on the beach for several weeks in a row. But here’s what we can do to focus…

1. Make sure pups have a place/ spot. It’s helpful when they know what’s expected and sometimes that is just being in the right area.

2. Teach the value of doing nothing. Show them how to calm their minds. Putting them in place and expecting them to chill there is not unreasonable. It also builds independence and becomes a safe zone where they don’t have to be “on”.

3. Rather than exercise when having a high energy moment, TRAIN. Exercise once they can gain control. Try for at least 2 training sessions a day. They don’t have to be long. 15 minutes can do it! But focus on you should be intense.

4. Feed with puzzles. Even if you just roll food and treats in a towel, it gets their senses working. And work is the key here. It’s less about exhausted legs, and all about exhausted minds.
