Whales in Alaska come down to one thing, and it's not the one most people obsess over.

It's not about timing your trip perfectly. The season runs May through early October, and the whales are there for all of it. What actually decides whether you see them is where you are, not when.

There's a stretch just south of Glacier Bay, around Juneau and Hoonah, where the geography does something special.
