Fun and very productive trip today out of Westport, WA aboard out of . Very professional crew. Great equipment. Limits of black rockfish and ling cod for 20 people! Highly recommended. Got very lucky with the weather.

Good write-up on the whole mess. Hopefully Capt. Brock gets the help he needs. Coast Guard/FDFW need to yank his credentials for sure. Guy is going to kill someone.

Also, the 3 other captains who are Army vets should be ashamed of themselves to just stand by and let this happen. Disgraceful.

Sounds like the way it went down was Brock blasted through the bridge, where he knew boats fished (slow down ffs). Maybe someone had their lights off—not cool. I yell at people all the time on the Lake out here in Seattle about it.

Someone yelled back—gotta let that s**t go man. Brock came back with three Army vet buddies and spotted a skinny kid (22, still a kid, dude, you’re 40) who may or may not have yelled at him earlier, and took out his rage on a helpless victim. It’s absolutely inexcusable.

If Coast Guard, local and Fish and Wildlife police don’t take decisive action on this, it will set a dangerous precedent and embolden abusers like Brock Horner going forward.

Please share.

A Florida charter captain has pulled his website down after video of him cussing out and jumping aboard the boat of another boater went viral.

The Pelican lives on! Glad to see she’s being kept well. Out there catching clams.

Fair winds and following seas to another Southern Maryland legend. Tommy Courtney of Courtney’s Restaurant in Ridge, MD passed away today. They just don’t make em like him anymore. He was a Vietnam Veteran who came home and fished his pound nets on the Potomac River near Point Lookout, MD for decades.

My first memory of him is when I was a greenhorn mate on a fishing boat more than 40 years ago. We used to stop at his pound net for bait by the bushel in the morning on the way to the fishing grounds. He was standing knee deep in mostly bait fish in his skiff that was barely afloat due to the weight of the thousands of fish that filled it. The fish were thrashing wildly; fish slime and scales everywhere, including in his hair and on his face.

I was a very skinny kid of 13 or 14 years and the boats were bouncing around in the waves. I had no idea what I was doing as he was passing bushels of flipping bunkers over to us. I’ll never forget the look of rage on his face and the tongue lashing I received when one of the baskets slipped out of my hand and half spilled into the river. I knew right then and there you better never mess with Tommy Courtney!

I spent many an afternoon and evening drinking beers at the bar at Courtney’s with the likes of Greg and Steve Madjeski, Mike Rollins and many others, enjoying Julie’s (his wife’s) fresh fried fish, oyster stew and other seafood, much of it wrested from the river by the rock-hard namesake of the establishment.

Tommy was truly a link to the past glory of St. Mary’s County; to a time before the expansion of the navy base and to a much simpler and, in my mind, much better time there. He and the times he represented will be sorely missed.
