HYDRATION
❄️
In the winter I’m a big fan of tea for my hydration while touring. I find that I’m not motivated to drink cold water in the cold.
😎
But once spring conditions fully set in and especially once I start doing multi-day trips, this becomes my standard drinking vessels. The small Nalgene with a coozie can hold coffee, miso, or a dose of electrolytes. I can also throw it in a boot liner, sleeping bag, or my puffy with hot liquids to warm up those objects.
The collapsible 3 liter container is nice for those times when I find a good water source in the mountains, whether to share with friends or bring to camp so I don’t have to melt as much snow. And then, of course, it collapses down to whatever size I need for whatever tour I’m on and gets smaller with each sip, which also motivates me to keep drinking.
💧
How do you hydrate while touring?

❄️
We started Graybird to bring people together. On the skin track. In backcountry lodges. In remote corners of the world. But also near home. Join us this Thursday night to come together with fellow backcountry travelers! 🎉

Lodge trips! Yeah, the skiing is great and the food is amazing, but what I love most is that a group of people (often not knowing most of the others) choose to gather in these remote locations to live together for a week free from many of life’s distractions. During that time we eat together, play games together, and laugh, a lot … together. Sometimes we laugh because we decide a party shirt needs to be a muscle shirt!

Also, all you need is a shovel and a slope with snow to have a lot of fun!

Who’s coming next year?!

RESORT DAYS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR BACKCOUNTRY DAYS 👍🏽
❄️
Every year I seem to tour more and ride lifts less, and I consider not getting a resort pass. But this time of year I value that pass so much to help me:
✅ Tune Up my downhill techniques, which will deteriorate over time if you are only (mostly) touring.
✅ Get in ski shape. Going downhill uses different muscles than going uphill, and you want to be able to rip that top to bottom pow lap when it’s in its prime in a month or so!
✅ Movement skills are safety skills, whether it’s for an Avy rescue or avoiding terrain.
✅ The resort can be a great place to get lots of repetition searching for beacons as you and your partner leapfrog down a ski run.
✅ Riding lifts is fun 😎 and you get to ride more.
❄️
We’ve seen an increase in high fitness backcountry enthusiasts who move uphill more efficiently and effective than they do on the downhill (when we often chose to expose ourselves to more avalanche risk). Unfortunately, lift tickets have become so expensive, but it’s still the best way to keep your downhill techniques sharp.
❄️
Thanks for the tips selfie 🙌🏾

MAKE A PLAN FOR CONTINUING YOUR AVY ED
❄️
Avalanche Education is a lifelong endeavor and straight from page 1 of the blue book is to make a plan for how you will increase your education this winter.

Lucky for you, we are launching a Virtual Mentorship Membership tomorrow night at 7 pm. The first two sessions are FREE! We just need your email to send you the link. 🛝 ➡️ DM.

Mentorship Membership. Ok, hear me out.

I absolutely love what I do, guiding wonderful people through beautiful spaces - specifically snowy mountains and avalanche terrain. And I feel incredibly fortunate that I’ve been successful doing that for many years, and I hope that continues for many more years to come.

I also love teaching and sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over all of these years. However, passing that knowledge along via traditional courses in person gets expensive or can be hard to organize.

So, I’m excited to launch a virtual Mentorship Membership that will be affordable, accessible, and hopefully fun!
✅ Monthly Video Calls that will be recorded and archived.
✅ Discussions about current best practices for risk management.
✅ Breaking down approaches to navigating complex terrain.
✅ Community Building (make new friends!)
✅ So much more including lots of perks for members.

First two sessions are free! I just need your email to send you the video link. 🤝🏽
