Here is Illusion, a Shrub Rose introduced by Kordes in 1961. From Kordes of Germany comes this rose of rare coloring; deep cinnabar-red to dusky, maroon scarlet, with a silken sheen to the petals. A disease-free and robust grower with a continuous display of blooms. Though it is light on fragrance we recommend this to anyone who wants a rich and brilliant color.

Here is "Golden Ophelia", a Hybrid Tea introduced by Cant in 1918. This rose that grew in the old Korbel House garden before renovations was believed by Phillip Robinson to be the Ophelia seedling introduced by Cant in 1918; golden yellow paling to apricot- buff, with the Ophelia silkiness of petal and smooth poise. Here is "Roi De Siam", a Climbing Hybrid Tea. As Charles Quest-Ritson indicates in his book Climbing Roses of the World, the rose by this name in Sangerhausen does not quite fit with the original descriptions, so we question this ID. A large, spreading plant with deep rosy-crimson blooms of intense fragrance, clearly with a strong dose of HP or Bourbon rose, with the disease sensitivities of those classes. Not a carefree rose for humid climates, but hardier than most Teas.

Today's rose is Fragrant Plum, a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1990 by Christiansen. A strongly scented lavender Hybrid Tea with darker plum tones towards the petal edges; this sensational introduction by Christiansen is still popular as a cut flower and a show rose. Very well formed but not highly double.

Our rose for today is Souvenir Du Dr. Jamain, introduced by Lacharme in 1865. Flowers of a plum w**e color shading to velvety crimson, near black. Noted for its fragrance, Souvenir Du Dr. Jamain is a moderate arching grower. This is one of the first Hybrid Perpetuals to make a comeback to modern gardens when Vita Sackville-West uncovered it in an English nursery. Flowers are small and come on short side branches from longer, smooth, lithe canes that are short-lived.

Today's rose is Madame D'Enfert, a Bourbon introduced in 1904 by Veuve Vilin & Fils. A seedling of Madame Ernst Calvat with the fragrance and generosity of its parent; flowers are large, globular, with rolled petal edges, lilac-blush to white tinted with rosy lilac on the edges, almost in a picotee fashion. Superb fragrance.

This is Golden State, a Hybrid Tea introduced by Meilland in 1937. Nancy Morehead of the Santa Rosa Junior College helped us track down the true name of this rose, which came from an old planting there; the "Tawny Yellow" has fruity-spicy scented flowers which begin a light, tawny, lemon-yellow, deepening in color as they age to golden-honey tones.

Here is Fair Bianca, an English/Shrub Rose introduced by David Austin in 1983. Very double, packed flowers of ivory white, open pure white with an intense fragrance. Fair Bianca, but for the smooth foliage, might well pass for a Portland rose.

Our rose for today is Camille Pissaro, a Floribunda bred by Delbard in 1996 and introduced in the US by Certified Nurseries in 2020. Striking flowers, with red, yellow, pink and white stripes, mildly fragrant. The shrub is bushy with dark green glossy foliage.
