How do you explain to your 8-year old child why he’s been hearing explosions and shootings outside for a month now, why it is not safe to play at his favorite playground, why there are dead bodies in his favorite park where he used to love to ride his bike, and why he has to stay away from the windows?
These are the questions my friend Alexey from Kherson, Ukraine is struggling to find answers to, hugging his precious son Evgeniy.
The city has been under Russian occupation pretty much since the beginning of the brutal invasion of Ukraine.
While some kinds of food are still available, the pharmacies are empty.
Every day Kherson residents like Alexey wake up wondering if Bucha's nightmare will knock on their door tomorrow…
People in Kherson have been getting kidnapped and vanishing when suspected to have been a part of the resistance. Yet it appears that absolutely any person could end up being a victim. Women get r***d. Men get killed. There is no authority that could be expected to bring any kind of justice.
After seeing the massacre in the suburbs of Kyiv which were also previously occupied by the Russian forces, Alexey can’t stop worrying for his family’s safety feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Considering different options to get away from life-threatening danger and this constant stress, Alexey told us that because long-term rental prices in safer places in Western Ukraine have gone over the roof, he is concerned if he will be able to afford anything over there.
We’ve known Alexey for many years as the most professional, polite, honest, and genuinely kind person from Ukraine. He is an IT freelancer who has been struggling to be able to work through these difficult times and is the main provider for his family.
Since the beginning of occupation of Kherson, Alexey became involved with volunteers who help get food and medical aid essentials to those in need in Kherson. Yet now we feel he and his family are the ones needing our support.
It breaks our hearts to think that because of financial lack Alexey and his wife may not be able to make the necessary choice to escape to safety before it’s too late.
As you may know, things are very unpredictable there, and ‘hell may break loose’ at any moment.
We hope he can relocate his family away from the war zone where his son won’t wake up to the sound of explosions every day.
I feel that it is very important for Ukrainian kids like Evgeniy to know that people in the West really care, that they are not indifferent to their pain and want to help.
And I invite you to support our Ukrainian brother Alexey in this difficult moment, to give his family hope of a more peaceful tomorrow.
All the funds raised will be sent directly to Alexey.
Many thanks in advance for any contribution!!
May peace prevail on Earth ️🙏
