This week, Ashley made the delicious meal pictured above. 100% of the ingredients came from the farm, and it’s gotten us thinking about the joy and deliciousness of eating with the seasons. Ashley roasted Sequatchie Cove chicken thighs with red potatoes and green beans from the garden and served them alongside tangy ferments and bright sungold tomatoes. This time of year really is one of the easiest times to eat seasonally and straight from the farm. The abundance of summer only lasts so long, so take advantage of it while you can!

You can get fresh produce and meat at our Trading Post and at the Main Street Farmer’s Market. You’ll have to come out to the Trading Post, though, to get new and exciting items that you won’t find at the market! We’re stocking all of these products with intention, like the Diaspora Spices used on Ashley’s chicken and veggies that support regenerative farms across South Asia. You can also get delicious, local Short Mountain Cultures ferments, OMG Honey from just down the road in Jasper, crisp refreshing Maypop sparkling water from our friends up in Nashville and more. Scroll down for the full list of available items. We hope to see you soon at the Trading Post! Open 9-12 Central Saturdays!

Our wheat is grown without any chemicals. That means no glyphosate, no pesticides, no fungicides, no fertilizers. Yea we have some weeds, yea maybe our yield is less than some heavily drenched crops. But THIS WHEAT DOESNT POISON ANYONE and this Wheat is good for the soil, good for wildlife habitat and good for diversifying our local food production! All that said we have had over 2” of rain per week for the past 5 weeks so we could end up with a total crop failure if this wheat doesn’t have the chance to dry down… we hope our other seeds we have planted don’t just rot in the ground… this is farming, it’s always a bit of a gamble… no one can control the weather! (At least I don’t think so 🧐)

Legumes are so cool! We have White Clover, Red Clover, Yellow Clover, and Hairy Vetch all naturally reoccurring and reproducing throughout our pastures without the need for additional seeding. The amazing thing with legumes is that they provide wonderful flowers for honey bees and other pollinators, they provide super high quality, high protein forage for our livestock AND all the while they are taking naturally occurring nitrogen out of the air and converting it to usable nitrogen in the soil for fertilizing itself as well as providing nitrogen for other plants in the pasture! Zero off farm inputs needed at all!! I am just blown away on a daily basis how incredible nature can be when we treat the land with love and respect…the land in turn provides for us!! This is an example of REAL LIFE Regenerative Agriculture!

Every year we find new plants growing in our pastures!!! This is the magic of regenerative grazing where we mimic nature… nature responds to our management and lets us know when it’s happy!! On our farm we have volunteering (we didn’t plant any of this) for the first time ever: Eastern Gama Grass, Big Bluestem… we have more and more patches of milkweed, chamomile, yarrow, native rye… along the edges of the pastures we have shrubs like elderberry thriving…literally hundreds of species of plants thriving on our property! And of course the plant diversity brings the animal diversity as well… we have families of turkeys and deer raising their young in our pastures. Rabbits, mice, foxes, coyotes, owls and hawks, hundreds of other birds and critters, not to mention the thousands of insects, and the web of fungi all throughout the soil! This is a true testament to the positive impact that ecologically minded agriculture can have on our planet… isn’t it just kind of amazing???

The sheep are enjoying grazing our young Chestnut orchard. We also use the flock to graze along the creeks, our farm has over a mile of creek bank along the Little Sequatchie River! Livestock can be used to heal the land, bringing back fertility and plant/wildlife diversity. They also can be used to control invasive species such as privet which typically likes to take over areas like creeks that cannot be easily mowed or mechanically managed. All the while these animals provide us with incredible nutrient dense foods very similar to our diets back when we were eating more wild plants and animals. Isn’t regenerative agriculture just the coolest?

It’s mornings like these as the fog rolls down the little Sequatchie river after an evening of rain I have to take a second look and remind myself that this is our home. We are so lucky to live here (and so are those chickens)

Sequatchie Cove Farm is a diversified farm of 300 acres nestled in the shadows of the Cumberland Plateau, located 35 minutes northwest of downtown Chattanooga. The farm is bordered by the Little Sequatchie River and is surrounded by thousands of acres of pristine Tennessee wilderness. The farm is run by Bill and Miriam Keener, Kelsey and Ashley Keener(and their kids Fletcher,Oliver and Ella Mae), Miriam’s parents Jim and Emily Wright, and an assortment of seasonal helpers from our community and beyond.

Our appreciation and respect for the land is constantly growing, the more we get to know the nuances of soil life, relationships between, bacteria, fungi, insects, animals, water cycles and weather cycles… everything is constantly changing and although we humans can create some change through our management decisions, in the long term we know that nature will have the last say…that is why we strive to work with natural systems and are always prepared to adapt our management and decision making processes to fit the circumstances that nature provides for us. We feel like the most important thing we can do as owners and managers of land is to try to leave our small piece of the world healthier, cleaner and more beautiful than when we found it.
